We have a rescue cat who we think is about 11 years old. She lived over 2 years on her own before finding us. Obviously she is an indoor/outdoor cat. She has never been RVing, but we would love to give it a try. Even if she adapts well, we are concerned that if we are gone exploring, the campground power goes out for whatever reason, and the AC goes off, what are you doing to make sure your cat (or dog for that matter) stays safe from overheating when left alone in the MH? Any thoughts or real life solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Cats like warm places so if you are reasonably cautious it shouldn't be a problem. Just don't be gone all day on hot days and/or cover the windows. What might be uncomfortable for you might just be fine for the cat on the floor.

Does the cat travel in a car? If not start the process. For all of our cats they settled down in a month of riding in a car.

Our last cat just passed away but what a traveler. She was 1 1/2 years feral when she adopted us and became a family member. Traveling in cars, boats and MHs was an opportunity to sleep. Twice she went to FL right under the airplane seat.

When we brought the MH home she would paw at the door and then run to get inside the MH ready to travel - one of our greatest memories.

When driving we kept a 6' red leash on her harness. This made it very easy to locate which favorite hiding spot she was using. And it was important to locate her before operating the slides.

We take our dogs every once in awhile and have worried about the same thing. We've never left them for more than a few hours but what I did was make sure water was available and had a box fan blowing in the area they were staying.

We have 2 cats that travel with us.......and we hardly ever stay where we have hook-ups so we can't run fans or A/C. I've worried, too, but the cats usually crawl under the couch when it's a warm day. It's amazing how much cooler it is under there!!!

Take her out to the MH a few times and stay a while before you even start the engine.

We use the Verizon home connect. When we are on the road we take it with us. I also have a Sensaphone 400 that I use in our 5th wheel when we are in Arizona for the winter. It will call my cell phone when the temperature in the 5th wheel exceeds my preset limits. I also use a motion detector for notice if someone breaks into the 5th wheel. This type of setup should work for you.

Freeze Alarm thread...

We had the same concerns...now our camper calls us if the power goes out or the temperature rises. We can also call- in for a status report.

My vet told me once a cat is close to a "desert" animal. Meaning they tolerate heat very well.

How long does it take your RV to heat up? I don't believe the inside temp will skyrocket like it would in a car.

I've got a remote sensor thermometer in my RV with historic highs and lows. I zero out the history every time I store it. Last time ambient temp high (in the storage bay) was 94, interior temp 108, plenty high enough to cause problems with a cat.

I like the idea of a temp sensor remote call device like chuggs has.

I'll just add that even having a neighbor help by calling you if the power goes out in the CG or to keep an ear out to listen that you a/c is working while you take off for a bit doesn't always work.

I was actually parked at a friends house with the MH this past winter. I asked them to check my MH periodically to be sure my A/C was running on a very hot day when I had to go into town.

They checked and listened for me, BUT the A/C had frozen up and what they were hearing was JUST the fan running. When I got back it was over 100 in the MH and all the dogs were in distress.

So just saying just listening for the A/C is not always an indication that it is cooling.
