Holy Cow, that is a trip! may be able to give better route advice if given the general direction of travel. I could give you stop ideas but if your going west first it would be a long way out of your way to see them...

If you haven't been yet, my favorites would be: New Orleans,
Texas: Dallas Book Depository, Ft Worth Stock Yards,
Oklahoma City http://www.visitokc.com/things-to-do/
Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial and National Cowboy Museum
Colorado: Pike's Peak and Estes Park
We haven't been to Wyoming or Montana yet - we're headed there in July but Yellowstone and Glacier National Park are on our list.
In Canada, Banff and Lake Louise.
do you have your passports?

I would recommend getting a copy of "The Milepost". It is basically THE encyclopedia for traveling the ALCAN. You should be able to google it and purchase online. I know Amazon has them for about $20.

We took our travel trailer, two mountain bikes and two kayaks and did that trip from North Carolina. I was the trip of a life time.
If you would like a copy of our trip report which might give you some ideas, shoot me a private e-male and I'll send you a copy

Blizzards and heavy snow aren't that uncommon in the Rockies and Cascade mountains in early April so you might want to consider heading keeping south until you get to the west coast.

Between FL and AK is much more than 5 months worth of sights and activities, especially if you plan to go one way and return another. Heck, you could spend a full month in CO and another full month in UT. Make sure you have a plan of what are must see/do and what are nice to see/do.

thanks to all for suggestions. we do have passports. we thought we would go west and keep to the south and then head north. It sounds like we may have to try and do the cross country thing in more than one trip. There are so many things to see in the US. Of course we don't always want to be on highways.
