Anyone competent to work on automobile A/C can work on you dash HVAC.
They use the same components and refrigerant.
I am with the "get it fixed now" group, as something as simple as a blown hose could allow moisture in that would cause a lot of other problems if left unattended.

OP back again. I will be near a freightliner service center - they work on motorhomes - not much else in the area that does rv's - do you think freightliner might be able to do this repair? And yes, I will keep the ac off - thanks again, guys. I actually appreciate the variety of answers - it shows me that the problem will take some effort to get it properly diagnosed.

SNIP
Brett;
Don't count on that. Then again you did say can rather than will. I just spent over a week traveling from Lake Charles La. to Orlando Fl. During that time I contacted several places including RV repair shops and Freightliner trying to get someone to repair the dash air in my coach. Empire Freightliner who is listed as an Oasis (rv repair) repair shop and has 8 shops across the South said they would service the compressor but nothing else. Others just said they did not want to work on motorhome air conditioning. I finally ended up troubleshooting it myself with the help of others on the internet. I was finally able to find the part at Alliance Coach in Wildwood Fl. So once again we are happy (and cool) campers

IS it a repair a mobile tech can address: Perhaps (And if not he will know of a shop that can finish the job he starts, saves you a lot of time in the shop).
Second: Where as I do not know your system, Mine has 3 fuses. One just for the blower, One just for the compressor and one for the control electronics.
That last one failed and suddenly nothing worked .

Getting back to your original question as to whether or not a mobile tech could repair your dash AC, the answer has to be "maybe". All of the above answers are possibilities and depending on what the actual problem turns out to be, he might be able to fix it. I had a problem with my dash AC similar to your symptoms. I was headed to Tiffin in Red Bay, AL so decided to wait til I goth there to get it fixed. The diagnosis turned out to be low freon. However, these days to replenish freonPROPERLY requires some pretty sophisticated equipment, which a mobile tech is unlikely to have. The system has to be completely evacuated by putting a vacuum on it and then refilled. It's rather time consuming and not really very simple. My low freon was caused by a leaking connection which was easily fixed.

Yes, Freightliner should be able to repair your system, they did my present motorhome and another that I had a problem with the air conditioning 5-6 years ago.

OP - a bit of an update. I stopped by the freightliner repair center today (in the toad) and talked to the service manager. I explained the situation with the dash AC. He said to bring it in, they will work on it. I saw several mh's there, a couple in the bays. It is a large, clean facility. I will be there early Monday morning - let's hope they can diagnose the problem and fix it.

Good luck, sounds like things will work out. We have had great luck with some Freightliner shops and a less than gratifying experience with Empire Freightliner in the South. Spent 4 days at Martin Truck Center in Lake Charles La and could not have been treated better. They even provided overnight parking with 50 amp power.
Let us know how you make out.

I can live w/out, by using genny-roof air, but prefer to get it fixed. I am a fulltimer, currently in transit. The coach is '02 Newmar Kountry Star DP built on a freightliner.
They all go eventually. To each his own on this, but IMO, they were a waste of time weight and money in the first place that could have been put to better use elsewhere.

ours is marginal efficiency when working
it barely cools the drivers area, but that's better than burning propane for the onboard Onan
its better if you have a SuperC or whatever they call big house trucks now
you more cooling effect in the cab area with those units
Options, always have options, and the journey goes much smoother
