Two years ago I bought a Coleman Max folding chair from Walmart. It is supposed to be rated for up to 400lbs, is extra wide, and the seat back has a pretty good angle. I ended up hating it because it has no head support, the seat back for some reason has a "V" in it instead of a head rest.

But... My wife LOVES it! She has back problems, and the seat back angle is perfect for her to sit for extended periods.

Before you buy, definitely sit in the chairs in the store. If for some reason the store won't let you try out the chairs, don't buy them. Also try to imagine sitting in the chair for a long time. That Coleman Max chair was quite comfortable in store for a couple minutes, but it took sitting in for extended periods for me to decide I actually didn't like it. Wife found out basically by accident that it is perfect for her back.

Hubby has same problem. He had back surgery and even expensive zero gravity outdoor chairs aren't comfortable for him for very long. The other problem is what someone said, it is hard to get out of. When you find something let us know, we are still on our quest!

Get or make a small cushion to place behind his back. It should help a lot.
And we always take a heating pad along for my husband's back. If we are sitting outside it works with an extension cord.

THIS is the absolute most comfortable chair I have ever slept in! ... you have to have a sturdy place to hang it from - that's the only draw back for camping, but strong tree limb, or other creative device and you're set.... I love it!

L4-L5 Back surgery in 2000, C4-C5 Neck surgery in 2010.
I've used the zero gravity chairs and they are good and with a support pillow, can usually get comfortable in them for a while when my bad is acting up. The nice thing about them is that they can be adjusted to different positions and move the pressure to a different spot, depending on what is aching. One of those back supports with the beads inside that are very firm was the key for me.

I also have had great luck with a plastic chair that the back reclines in to about 45 degrees. I've had them for about 30 years and while they don't look great, they are very sturdy and with the back adjusting to about 5 different angles from straight up to 45 degrees, I always can get comfortable in them.

My last secret is a good anti inflamatory. Most of my discomfort is arthritis related and a couple of days on a good anti imflamatory med will pretty much eliminate any pain I'm having. If it's severe, maybe a day of ice packs being roated on/off every 30-40 minutes and I'm usually ready to go the next day.

Camping Life has certainly got easier with the TT over the popup and as long as I don't over do it in other activities like hiking or amusement parks, I seldom have any issues anymore.

X2 on the back support/lumbar support. That will go a long way to giving some relief.

I have these Big and Tall Harbor Mist Recliners from Camping World. They are wonderful to sit in, but they're large, heavy and don't store easily in the MH. I don't take them out unless I'm going to be in 1 place for 2 weeks:

I have these that I end up using most of the time. linky. They're wide-body friendly, stable, and support 425 lbs. The mesh bottom and back help it to dry out quick after a rain.

That is how my last set was. Way too heavy and bulky. They have others that are not near as heavy as some, you gotta shop around if you are ever interested in another set.

Some here have mentioned awkward to get out of...mine go all the way down when rising and not awkward at all.

Wow, you guys and gals are great! I'm always amazed that people from all over the country are able to learn from each other and are so willing to help. I appreciate all the suggestions. DH is sitting here with me, we've made notes on the different chairs, with our Camping World and Cabela catalogs handy. He will probably stop at CW and try some out. I'll keep you posted. Ch-ta, your comment was so kind and thoughtful. Thanks to you all for taking time to help us. We really want to keep camping; we plan to retire next year and hope to take off for some LONG roadtrips so we need to be comfortable!
