What are some of the most exciting/interesting things to do in Yellowstone? We will be there for four days in August, 2012. We will be staying at an RV Park in West Yellowstone.
old faithful, of course. we like to get there near the time we want to eat lunch or supper. then we can eat before, while we're waiting, or eat after the show. included in the outing is a tour of the old lodge, very interesting, and a walk around the geyser basin area.
there are horseback rides to take if you're so inclined.
be sure and drive out to Cooke City, the northeast gate and go on to the top of Beartooth Pass.
for us, Yellowstone is a look/see park. We don't hike or bike, so we drive and stop/look/see. if you don't like looking for wildlife (and spotting it) you might be pretty bored after a day of it.
Down in the Jackson area, there is white water rafting and a ride to the top of the mountains in Teton Village, a rodeo a couple times a week, and a shootout on the square each evening. Also a crafts fair once a month... with really nice arts and crafts.

Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.
It is best to do what you are doing, plan ahead, and look at the maps, see what is there, and look at what you can see in one day. THere is a webcam of Old Faithful, and you can get a basic idea of what time of day it will be erupting, the timing is about every 90 minutes, they adjust that time by a few minutes based on how long each eruption is.
Expect to have traffic delays, and road construction, also "Animal Jams" - where a moose gets to close to a road, and everyone slows down to take a picture.
Not much worry about snow in early August, but towards September, it might happen. Don't forget a jacket, you might be wearing shorts or a heavy jacket, you never know.
Search "Yellowstone" in this forum and you'll find more things to do then you have time for. In four days you'll just scratch the finish of what's there.
Yellowstone is bigger than the state of Rhode Island - huge. I would do my best to make plans how much, or all, of the figure 8 you want to do. Last year we drove every road in YS but we had 7 full days. We were there in Sept and Aug will be much more crowded.
Best advice I can give is plan and LEAVE EARLY IN THE DAY.

We were hooked on wildlife spotting. After checking out the geysers one day, we spent the rest of the time looking for wildlife. We stayed at Fishing Bridge, and in the office there, they kept track of where wildlife was spotted. That gave us a good idea where to go look. We're not big hikers, but we did hike to see the Upper and Lower Falls in the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.
My favorite activity is fishing, followed closely by animal watching - especially watching bears. Both activities involve a significant investment in time and a certain amount of serendipity.
I also spend a lot of time geyser gazing. Not just the one everybody sees, Old Faithful, but some of the other larger and rarer eruptions. If geysers interest you check in at the visitor center for predictions of Castle, Riverside, Daisy and Grand Geyser.
We enjoyed the volcanic features of the park. Follow hwy 89 north ans outh there are a lot of geysers and short trails through thermal areas. The animals would be our next interest. Whatever you decide to do it will be enjoyable.
