As my buddy Les says being able to start a fire is number one. Multiple lighters and a flint striker are a good start. Proper clothing is a must. Something to carry water in is also importand. A good knife also helps start a fire and has multiple other uses.
Also, know how to use anything you bring. If you don't know what to do with it then it is useless. Knowledge is more importand than anything you take with you.
Oh, I forgot another thing that I keep in the RV and can take if needed. I have a folding buck saw. It folds up to a pretty small package (small enough for backpacking) and it cuts wood like you would not believe. There are metal folding ones available but I'm a bit sentimental to wood tools.
