My newly acquired 10 year old Sierra has a Magnetec 7345 converter in it... It seems to work OK, charges the battery with correct voltage, lights the lights, etc...

When plugged in to shore power (120 VAC) and nothing on (just charging the battery) it is quiet.

When I turn on 4 interior ceiling lights the fan will come on. It does this whether the outside temp is 70 or 90 F

Is this normal for this model?
(The converter in my last RV did not do this, though I don't recall the make or model. Which is why I ask.)

I did a search but could not find the answer to my question. Thanks for any information.

Sounds normal. The fan is there to cool the circuit board. It is controlled by a thermal switch.

My Magnetec 7345 did the same thing and also made an annoying hum most of the time. It had a large transformer in it which generated a lot of heat causing the fan to run a lot. I replaced the whole unit with a solid state one 5 or 6 years ago and solved the problem. By the way, mine stays plugged in 24/7/365 when not being towed.

It's when it stop running at all that you have to be concerned. That's what my old 6345 did and burned it self up.

Normal for about all converters. Consider LED lights to reduce power draw and fan activity.

Thanks guys, sounds like the fan running a lot is normal for the Magnetec.

I have the same converter and it does not run all the time unless it gets crudded up.
I have found that I have to vacuum it in place or take it out and blow air through it once a year or so to get the pet hair and dust out so it doesn't get hot enough to turn the fan on all the time.

We had two Shelties and a long haired cat that have now passed on and Katie cat is a short haired cat so it may not have to be done as often now.
