The campground where we are staying provides free wifi, well, limited free wifi, limited to 30 minutes per day. After that, you have to pay, or you can't get on. OK, so far, so good. However, when you sign on to their home page and informed of this, you also see this:
"*In order to improve your Wi-Fi reception we have had to institute the following rule: The use of private Wi-Fi and or mobile Wi-Fi systems (Mi-Fi) is prohibited in the park, unless your system is set to channel 11 and encrypted. Failure to do so will result in expulsion from the park. We are sorry but we hope you will understand. Thank you."
I am not technical enough to understand all this and wonder if someone could explain it to me, or is this their way of forcing you to use (and pay for) their wifi?

it means they actually have someone who understands "wifi" and the type of issues that come up.
there are only so many channels and the campground is apparently using all of them but channel 11 which they allow you to use.
this is so the wifi signals don't stomp on each other. very very smart move. i would assume that the wifi coverage in the park is excellent.
they can and will find you if you think you can just sneak it.
move to channel 11 and call it a day. nice system pretty sure i know the design they are using

They likely have their wifi set up on channel 1. By using a channel # far away from 1, namely 11, you will reduce radio interference and each personal wifi will operate faster.
I usually scan channels in use and change my channel # to enhance my speeds.
It would be insane to deliberately use the same channel that is being broadcast throughout the campground.
There are only three radio channels available in the US for wifi service that do not overlap, channels 1, 6, and 11. A powerful transmitter operating on the same frequency as the parks, or even on a channel that overlaps their frequency can cause severe interference and cause other users to drop off. The policy sounds severe, but it may be a sign of things to come. There is so much interference caused by people's wireless routers and hotspots that keeping clean internet in the park is becoming more and more difficult. I can see where the adoption of similar policies may become more common in the future.
IF the campground free WIFI is any good, it should not be a problem. If you're prohibited from using your own and theirs is NOT very good, time to move on.
