Anyone have any dry camping/boondocking areas they'd recommend for NM? Unfortunately, I'll be there in January, not the best time, I'm sure but am totally unfamiliar with the State.

Thx, Larv

The se corner of state hwy 396 (county 270) and the Black river crossing ne of Carlsbad Cave. BLM land.
Use a spotter on top of the east hill to slow westbound traffic while you back in off the highway. Enjoy fishing in the pond. The bass were especially tasty with a Riesling.

Northern New Mexico in January will be pretty chilly.

Try this:::http://www.publiclands.org/explore/search.php?plicstate=NM

I have to say that this "freecampsites" thing is IMO pretty useless...it has very few "campsites" and lots of parking lots, Pilots, Flying J's etc etc......that is not camping!!!!it is one night stands to catch some ZZZZZ's ....nothing wrong with that but it AIN't camping and it ain't real boondocking as I define the word. Boondocking, whatever else it is connotes a place where you can actually camp for some extended period of time if you want. You can put out your slides, your furniture, set up the grill and actually camp....you can't do that at 95% of those "freecampsite" places.

Larry - take another look at this site. Most of the camping spots are on public lands and fit your description of boondocking. There is another freecamping site that has many parking lots listed but it's not this one.

Check the average temperatures at the places that look good.

Thanks, I'll do that. I may have it confused.
