Has anyone seen the self drive Google camera cars. The car literatly drives itself with GPS and cameras. Stops at stop signs, traffic lights, can see people crossing in front and slow down. The video I saw had the driver who was not driving behind the wheel, he told the car to go to Taco Bell. It went through the drive thru without any assistance. This is the future of driving.

The reason I brought this up is imagine this technology in a motorhome
Just tell it where to go and sit back and relax, go make a sandwich, take a nap etc.

It probably will be in the near future but its going to be a lot longer than that to get it perfected. Todays GPS units can make you turn left into an address when its on the right. So I'd be really scared of depending on it to get me through a drive thru window

There are few things that I enjoy more than driving. Everything from my old sports car to the RV...I hope this is not the future. :-(

I saw one just last week on Highway 101 not far from Google. There was a guy in the drivers seat, but I couldn't tell if he was driving it or just riding in it.

Drivers sit behind the seat but have never had to take over or had an accident in hundreds of thousands of miles of driving , according to google ...Fords head says Parts of this will be in future cars soon like , auto collision avoidance and detecting if your driving erratic but drivers will not give up driving soon .. Until the govt decides humans are too dangerous to be driving ! and I bet that's not far away.

Drive by wire, yah, great idea. Can anyone say Toyota?

My Cooper is drive by wire. There are times when this is very frustrating, because it means some engineer in a lab thinks they know more about what I want more than I do. There are times when you step on the gas, and the car just doesn't go, or hardly goes as a result of trying to prevent wheel spin. After several updates, the car got much better. Now translate something that simple to fully taking over the act of driving - not in coach or car.

Theve been testing on California roads for a couple years ... They have applied in Nevada for a permit but in Cali they were just doing it with a "driver" behind the wheel "driving" no permit is needed . Maybe they finally decided to make it more public and have it be more visible the computer is driving There were several stories last year about people seeing cars and the drivers panicking and taking control of the car when they were seen at lights etc. ;-) A couple of tech blogs I listen / read talked about it last year.
The head of google wants to make transport more safe and eliminate traffic congestion ... These cars can drive a foot apart from ea other at high speed. No drivers to Gawk at things and cause slow down accidents.
