We are in the process of planning our trip to Newfoundland for 2013 and were interested in favorite foods. We will be spending at least 8 weeks on the island. We will be towing a 30' 5th wheel so any information about campgrounds will also be appreciated. After reading all the posts here, I think I have all the sights listed but we are interested in favorite places to eat when we're not cooking.

I will assume you are going to St. Anthony and L’Anse aux Meadows. While in St. Anthony, you must eat at the Lighthouse Cafe and order their scallops - the best we have ever eaten.

Cod cheeks should be on the list too!! And those little salty smoked fish (like smelt) that goes with beer, can't remember the name, wonder why?? But they were good...someone will remember. Great trip, enjoy!!

Capelin - they come smoked, fried, dried or roasted.

But the way I like them best is have a couple of beer, then roast the little suckers over a campfire.

Fishermans brews is good - fresh fish and brews(hard bread that has been soaked and heated) mixed together with the drippings from fried salt pork poured over it. May not meet a heart friendly diet requirement.

Fish and brews is salt fish, served with brew (the hard bread again - its better than it sounds) and potato.

Moose can be really good, but you can't get it everywhere, and the quality varies from animal to animal. It is usually tougher than beef, and preparation is absolutely key.

The correct answer to "Favorite Food in Newfoundland" would be Pan-Fried Cod, Brewis, Britches and Cod Tongues.

First you have to get "skreeched in" takes a few minutes and15 bucks. Oh ya, then there's the kiss the cod thing, then off to a beach boil. Don't worry, they will show you.

We loved the Friendly Fisherman in Rose Blanche. After you get off the ferry in Port aux Basque follow the coast road to the east. You'll come to Rose Blanche. In L’Anse aux Meadows we loved the Norseman restaurant. There is an RV park in Grand Codroy that many people stay in after the ferry ride to Port aux Basque. It's great. Many people stay in Pippy's in St. Johns, but we liked Blue Fin in Holyrood. We spent 30 days there and had Cod 28 days and loved it. I hope you like fish. All the other CVG's were good but not remarkable. You can't go wrong in Newfoundland.

In Nova Scotia on your way to North Sidney to catch the ferry to NFLD watch for a place called Lick A Chick. It is a takeout, eat in, fried chicken place with other offering, and with their own ice cream variations, excellent.

Go with all the before mentioned food suggestions. Another dish is using scruntchions, small cubes of pork used with salted cod to re hydrate the cod, then hard tack bread is added and the whole dish is called fisherman's brewis.

Couple of times had moose stew.

If you want a basic RV park cheap, no hookups, has showers, awesome view, did I say awesome view, and beach combing, turn off the HWY 430 to St Anthony, head for Port au Choix. The RV park will be on the water side. I cannot remember but maybe Kinsmen or the name of another service club.

We also caught the ferry over to Labrador, dirt cheap. Three years ago it was less than a buck a foot. When off the ferry we drove up to L'Anse-au-Loop and parked in the gravel parking lot at the government wharf, loads of room for free. Used this as our base for a couple of days. An elderly newfi walked down and had a chat with us. His accent was very strong and I missed most of what he was saying. The main road can be rough and narrow in spots but quite dueable. We were right on the water and at that time there where two big icebergs grounded in front of us. I would collect ice off them that washed ashore and use it in my adult beverage. Ice from Greenland, thousand of years old. Drove up as far as Red Bay

Take the boat cruise up Western Brook Pond in Gros Morne park.

Go into Twillingate and north of there in Crow Head a group puts on a dinner show that is very interesting. The actors if they are still doing this are no spring chickens most of them, cook the supper, serve it, clean up, then put on the show. Lots of fun.

At St John's We stayed at Blue Fin untill we could get into Pippy's. Blue Fin is a lot nicer though about 35K out of town. Pippy's is right in town.

If you go to Bonavista which I recommend and want to see birds called Puffins up close better than any paid tour, drive into Elliston and ask where to see the Puffins. On Google earth look at Elliston, due east across a bay there is a point, go out there. You will almost trip over them.

NFLD awesome place to visit. Oh head for George ST. in St. John's. Also while there if interested, go for a ride on a moving ship simulator at the Marine Institute.

Let's see, there is a restaurant at the end of Fishing Point Park in St. Anthony, where I had crab on the crab 1/2 shell while watching whales.

But seriously, friends, there is some good beef grown in Newfoundland. I used to buy it by the side. Nice grass fed beef, the best. If interested, pm me. These folks had their own meat market when I moved away.
