Need a route from Petulma Elks to Salinas Elks.
Don't want to go over the Golden Gate bridge.
36' motorhome with a tow.
Thanks

Not a lot of choices...

South out of Petaluma on 101 to 37 to Vallejo.
I-80 west to I-780 south through Benecia to I-680 south through San Jose to 101 south toward Los Angeles.

or

South out of Petaluma on 101 to Exit 451B for I-580.
Keep left at the fork and follow signs for I-580 Richmond/San Rafael Bridge. Merge onto I-580 east.
To I-880 south to San Jose.
I-880 south to 101 south toward Los Angeles.

I would do the first one myself. Don't like the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge (it's an over/under, and going east you'll be under.) Also don't like driving the 880.

I, too, would opt for jbarry's first suggestion.

101 south, 580 east, 80 west, 880 south, 101 south. 880 will beat your suspension, but 1/101 at the gate is under construction, who knows how the temp road is today.

Except for the short stretch across the Golden Gate bride taking Hwy 101 is a straight shot to Salinas and it is flat the entire distance. If you leave after 10:00 AM the morning commute rush into San Francisco will be largely over. In the morning there is much less chance of encountering winds coming off the ocean which usually don't start to blow until the afternoon as the inland areas heat up.

The alternative involves taking the San Rafael bridge over to Oakland and then south on Hwy 880 which is under heavy construction with new overpasses being built and then intersecting Hwy 101 in San Jose and making a very tricky merge with traffic that is coming off Hwy 101 northbound to get onto Hwy 880 southbound. It is a much longer and more stressful route than going across the Golden Gate bridge.

By the way the only way to get to Salinas from Petaluma is to cross one or more bridges so it is really only choosing which one and none are particularly wide.

We took the route from SR 101 to 37, I80, I780 to 101 in March that is described by jbary above. We weren't towing at the time, but other friends with us were and it was OK. The Benicia bridge has a toll the other way. It would cost you $15 for the GGB south-bound for an RV and towed, not to mention the construction just beyond the bridge. Jack

I would go with jberry's first suggestion also. I live in Prunedale (7 miles north of Salinas). There is an extreme amount of construction on 101...the lanes are narrow with cement barriers. People are not driving the 55 mph speed limit...I suggest you are very, very careful through the area south from the Red Barn to Salinas proper. The turn-off for the Elk's is improved and an easy off/on 101. Have fun!
