Just discovered the battery for my PUP is dead. We're camping in two weeks at a powered site. Do I need the battery if I'm plugging in or is it only for "off the grid?"

You can, but is better to have the battery in it. If you don't have the battery, you will need to keep the positive cable insulated fro everything. Almost everything is operated by the 12 volt system. The battery acts as a buffer for the system when you loads change. If you have slides or anything with a high power demand, you can over load the convertor. Personally, I would get a battery.

Are you required to have brakes in your state? If so you are required to have a battery and emergency breakaway switch for brake operation.
If you have a bad battery the converter will continually try to charge it and could damage the converter.

I would put something back on, even if it's a low-end battery. Originally, I had no desires to camp with my '06 Jayco 1007 model off-grid, and it didn't have electric brakes, so no real need to have a battery. But I put one on anyway. There were a few surprise times along the way where I was glad to have the battery. I subsequently upgraded it to a Group 31 battery, even for minimal off-grid usage.
I would put at least a low-CAD dollar battery in, so slip over into Duluth to the Costco there and pick up something.

Personally for the price of one battery I would want to replace it.
As mentioned above, the battery acts as a buffer for your electrical system.
Plus you never know when you may need to rely on it. Power outages ect.

Great, thanks all, I had no idea! On a positive note, the thing still works, it was just a fuse. But I'll be replacing it after this trip. Thanks again!

If it's not very old I would recommend taking it to a Napa, O'Reilly's or whatever auto parts store you have up there and get it tested. It may not need replacement. On another note, I would try to find out why the fuse blew. If it's the main fuse for the 12v system it's usually 25 or 30 amp and takes quite a load or a direct short to blow.

It's the fuse that runs off the positive connector to the battery. Happens quite a bit actually. Just dropped the PUP off at the dealer for bearings and mentioned it. They suggested a bigger wiring issue.

I had a dead battery and my electric brakes worked. I did find that more worked properly when the battery was replaced. I haven't boon docked with just a battery but plan on it this winter. I am thinking of using a small quiet generator.

While the trailer's electric brakes will work without the battery when connected to the tow vehicle, the breakaway system will not work without the battery.
