Thanks for everyone's replies for things to do and see on the east side of Lake Michigan. We've been deciding on our itinerary and hubby said he wants to "scoot" down to Cabela's in Dundee... Since we're heading downstate, I thought we might take in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.

I don't really want to camp close to Dearborn, so can anyone make a suggestion of a decent camping area about an hour away from Dearborn? We'll be coming from Frankenmuth... How about Seven Lakes State Park?

Oh, I said only one more question, but I thought of something else! How about the best place to camp around Traverse City... we'll be staying there for 3 nights - golfing, shopping, Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore!

Traverse City you have Traverse Bay RV Resort, Holiday Park Campground, or Kalkaska RV Park...

They also have Traverse City State Park but really not suited for larger rigs...

If you prefer to boondock you can at Turtle Creek Casino...

While in TC if you want a great breakfast check out The Omelette Shoppe...

There are two nice state parks 1 hour and 9 minutes from Henry Ford Museum. One is Bruin Lake in Pickney Recreation Area, Unadilla, MI (not too far from Hell, MI). The other is Hayes State Park southwest of Ann Arbor. Both are on lakes and there is nice camping. The Hayes park is near the Michigan Speedway so you have to make sure you are not near a race date. Reservations are recommended.

Indian Creek just about 16 miles west of Dundee off M-50. Very nice camp ground with large lots. You have Harbortown just off I75 exit 11. Also very nice with with a lot to do in Monroe.

Kalkaska RV park is a great little spot. Has limited # of full hookups tho. We liked the electric only sites better anyway.

Harbortown is pricy and a bit like a rig parking lot sprinkled with grass. Hayes state park can be crowded but if you grab the right spot it is a relaxing getaway park...

30 min east of Henry Ford, down I 94, is the only place in North America that you will find Feather Bowling. We do it every Christmas when i came home to visit.

We have been to both the museum and Greenfeild Village and the Village is better in my mine.
They are right next to each other. Visit their websites and see which one is best for you.
Sleeping Bear is great but last year someone said how great it was on TV and wrote a book. Now it is almost impossible to get into.

There used to be a "Greenfield KOA" not far from Henry ford, it's not a KOA any more but it's still a campground. Will try to link to it.

Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, you could spend a month or more there if you wished. In the village is a old doctor's office (Dr. Howard as I recall) the Docent told us he was like Sir Arthur (Doyle's) Teacher in that he would often diagnose a patient as they came up the walk.

The office, was a school house before the Doctor bought it, half brick half wood construction.

Before the village bought it, and moved it brick by brick and board by board, I passed it every day on my way to school.. That building is part of MY personal history.
