I will also agree with the statement of grease collecting dirt in such an open area. BUT... I'm not so sure the dirt will wear out the screw in my life time. So I'll trade the convience of quiet, easy threading, for dry, squeeky WD-40 or minimal dry lube, anytime.

I guess if you really didn't like the look of the "dirt", it could be cleaned off annually as regular maintenance and new stuff applied... Just a thought tho.

"Dry graphite spray" is what I was told to use. Get it on Amazon!

my vote would be for slip plate.

Locally the farmers use it on a lot of stuff - even the bottom of the gravity empty grain wagons. Stuff just don't cling to it and it is slippery.

I remember that in the NTSB report on the Alaska Airlines flight 261 crash, they did a big analysis of how clean grease, dirty grease, & no grease affected wear of a jack screw. Bottom line is, grease is better than no grease, and dirty grease is not a significantly worse lubricant than clean grease.

The front jacks are commonly called the "landing gear". We were discussing the rear stabilizer jacks. Mine are BAL scissor style jacks and have leadscrews.

However, I do pull the caps off my landing gear legs and put some lube on the bevel gears. I would do the leadscrews if I could get to them without pulling the leg out. But I can't, so lubing the bevel gears will have to suffice.

Grease? Lube? We don't need no steenkin' lube on our jacks! :-) I've never lubed mine and they work just fine. Tap 'em with the screw handle to knock off the worst of the dirt and they go out and in without a problem. I doubt they'll ever wear out since they don't get used all that often. :-(
