I am sorry to have the Good Sam name associated with Flying j. To partner with a company that is really not a RV friendly business just doesnt sit well with me. I used FJ thru the loyalty card joke, but when the $10 dump fee showed up I said no more. I can get gas cheaper elswhere and dump at no charge along my route. I know my little $150
plus and propane purchases will not change anything, but I feel better just driving past FJ stations and across the street to Travel America or whatever else is there. With a little luck they will go bankrupt for good next time.

They're been charging for a couple of years now. Only cost me $5 to dump at Flying J and glad to pay it. Check out what it cost to drive in at camp grounds, fair grounds, and local treatment plants. You have to pay for the service almost everywhere else unless you are paying a camping fee.
If you are on a city treatment plant it cost you, if you have a septic tank it cost you to have it pumped out, and if you have the lines get plugged up from people dumping trash down it cost you. So why shouldn't they charge to pay for maintenance and providing the service to you.

Even at 10 bucks it would be well worth it to me if I need to dump.
As you said, everyone has overhead of some sort.

Yep, I agree 100%. If someone at Pilot/Flying J had tried, they couldn't have done a worse job. I regularly save between 10 and 22 cents a gallon on diesel by shopping elsewhere and their food service, customer service, and discount cards are a joke and an insult to the RV community. Just look at the big rigs that are NOT in their lots or NOT lined up for fuel. Definitely not a company to buy stock in or make a major investment in. I don't think it'll be long. We run between 20,000 and 30,000 miles a year and watch these things closely.

Local campground here charges $28 for use of the dump station. Because of various reasons, it cannot drain into there septic systems and must be pumped out commercially when nearing full. Also the dump station and septic systems have to be inspected regularly $$$$$.

The whole point of the free dumping at Flying J was not to be of service to the RVing community--it was a business decision to attract RVers who would
1) buy their fuel there and
2) Make food purchases.
That being said, the cost associated with the dumping was far more than offset by the increase in profits from the RVers spending.
Personally, I think it was a poor business decision on their part, and the $10 charged far outweighs the actual cost of providing the service. They are now looking at dump fees as a profit source, rather than a means of selling more fuel and food.
But it's their world, and they can run it as they choose, I however am free to ttake my business elsewhere-- and I do.
Alaska is next! Still trying to fit the pontoons to the RV so We can get to Hawaii!

I love all the FJ bashing posts. If people don't use them, it makes for less congestion at their RV islands which are really handy IMO. Upset at $5 to dump tanks.....where in the world is it cheaper ???

Flying J has been charging a fee for at least a year, maybe two. I can't believe they are still in business now that all the RVers who said they will never use Flying J again have had plenty of time for their boycott to take full effect on Flying J's (actually Pilot's) finances. I would have thought they would all be ghost towns by now. Could it be that they are first and foremost TRUCK STOPS, and really don't rely on only RV business to generate their income? If the fees had detrimental impacts on their business, they would have removed them. I seriously doubt the company is run by people so stupid they would let a dump fee destroy their business as a matter of principle. The fact that the fee remains in effect is evidence that it was a good idea for the company.
