It's been setting all winter and I just charged the engine battery.
I have to try to start it 4 or 5 times before the starter will engage, then it starts.

the old starters have a bendix spring inside the starter which gets weak with age.
You could get a shop to rebuild your starter or get a new one form the local auto parts store. Or it might get better with use.
Clean and tighten all battery and starter connections. good luck

Does it start/turn over engine fine 30 seconds after you just it down?
My on my 1989 Ford 429 truck starts fine but drags when engine is hot so I need to replace it. New is only about $100 and I am going to get a new cable to the battery so I can replace it when I do that low down job.
I vote to used it for 15-20 starts and see how it is working.

If when the starter is energized, it makes a whirring noise, without engine revolution. Then may be a bendix fault.
If just a clicking sound, then more likely an armature fault or weak solenoid.
What ever the fault, during repair, buy the best parts you can afford. You only like cheap parts once.

Open the dog house, look forward on the left side. Look past the cruse control module and you will see a starter RELAY. It's the most likely cause of your problem. It's a known issue amongst informed F53/460 owners.

Open doghouse, look in toward where your right foot rests @ gas pedal and you'll see the starter relay. Looks like this...

Thank you Peter & Dawn for your response. The picture you sent didn't get to me. After the end of your note it said *image not shown due to your preference setting* I don't know what these settings are or how to change them. I'll just get into the dog house & see what I can find. Thanks again.

Thanks Dutch for instructions for setting my preferences. I got the picture OK and found the relay, mighty close quarters! I held it with my hand while my wife turned the key on and could feel it pulsing. After trying twice it started. I can't see it very well, so will try to find a more detailed picture of the relay or see if a parts store has one on hand i can look at. Would it be the same part number as a Ford truck?

Reggie,
I have a 97 F53 chasis on mine and I have the same issue occasionally. Mine has an anti-theft ignition system in which the key has a chip in it that must connect with the ignition system in order for the starter to engage. It could be that the wireless connection t has some interference. If you have a second ignition key, try it and see if acts any differently. Good Luck.
