I would trailer them to the trail head and make sure the trailer is locked to the truck and the truck has an alarm. Thieves know you won't be back for awhile if they see an empty trailer at a trailhead.
I thought it was legal to ride across any highway to get from one side of the trail to the next. I thought riding across the road way was OK, but riding on the roadway was not. Walking the bikes across sounds way more dangerous than riding them. That sounds like a good way to get yourself killed.

We cross the road all the time at Ocotillo Wells and have been told by rangers it is ok to cross to get to trail on other side. This should be the proper code.
State law does allow you to cross any two-lane highway at a angle of approximately ninety degrees. The following is an excerpt from the California Vehicle Code, section 38025(a):
"On a two-lane highway, only to cross the highway at an angle of approximately 90 degrees to the direction of the roadway and at a place where a quick and safe crossing may be made, etc., etc., etc.....

That's the question I've always wondered as well. One of the main reasons we tow tandem, but like others have said, not an option in all states.

Sure there are. Some CGs accommodate the OHV vehicles more than others. Some have plans in place and some outright ban the toys. That's why it helps to know which CG.

I got my answer; don't ride an OHV on the road. To get to the trailhead, either trailer it, put it in the back of a truck, or find a CG on the trails.

We have made a collection of campgrounds(RV parks, public campgrounds, etc.) where you can ride right out of the campground. One of the best in Florida is Lake Oklawaha RV Resort where you can ride all of the Ocala Forest trails. Out west there are many places where you can ride right out--now in North Fork, Idaho where you can(Elk herd is 3 miles from the RV park)!!
For $60 you can get on road and off road tags from Montana. Mirror, horn and $50 for insurance and you good to go in about ten states.

This IS a problem.
I would say over 90% of the places we know of DO NOT allow riding out of camp. DW and I have a very small list of campgrounds where riding is OK.
Owning a TH allows you to boondock, however in our state they are cracking down on this too. Our friends don't have TT or TH so they need a campground. We usually have the friends tow a trailer for taking the quads/mc's to a trailhead.
I bought an XR650L because of this very reason. I also feel fortunate to have lived in a time (35-10 years ago) when this was not an issue. It was so much better and easier to camp back then. The govt/tree huggers/powers that be are doing a dis-service to the minority group that rides like us.
