Ford is changing its E series vans to the Transit, which will compete directly with Sprinters and offer a TDI option, with tall roof and long wheelbase.

Thank you to all who have given as usual, a great breadth of knowledge and insight. I guess that when I said Allison transmission, I was going off what some dealer had said. Yesterday I visited a local dealer only to be told that the Roadtrek doesn't come with the 4.8 engine. Oh well, I guess that is why we have these forums, to get the true information.

Thanks again, Topo

The Roadtrek 170, and Simplicity both come with the 4.8, with the 6.0 being an option.

Don't get the 4.8 engine and 4 speed tranny! We have it, and it is anemic pulling a 9500 pound Roadtrek around. Gas mileage is similar or only slightly better than what we've seen reported with the 6.0 and 6 speed.

If you are set on the Roadtrek, 6.0 gas is the engine to have.

It is technically possible to contact H&P and have them build one on a Duramax 6.6 diesel.

But that is not so simple, as the generator will have to be a propane one (special order) or a diesel.

Will you recover the extra cost? Not likely.

But if you really want a diesel, you can have one!

I have a 2012 Roadtrek 190 Simplicity built on the 3500 chassis with the 4.8L engine, 6 speed tranny, and I am very pleased with it. Driving back from FL this winter I averaged 18.4 mpg driving 65-70 mph (from FL to MD it got 19.3 mpg). I just did a 1700 mile trip around the Gaspe in Canada, which was very hilly, and averaged 16.4 mpg over the entire trip. On some of the steep grades (12-15%) it downshifted and chugged up, but I would expect that from any engine lugging almost 9,000 lbs. The 190 Simplicity weighs a few hundred lbs less than a regular 190 (smaller water tank, 1 less battery and having the 4.8L vs the 6.0L). Based on my experience, if I had the choice, I would go with the 4.8L for the gas mileage.

Sorry to change the topic... Rodger the MOD would punish me. I'll blame it on banandanna... BUT...

...dang... what a massive improvement in looks over the ugly Econoline dinosaur. That's one sharp looking new van. I can see interesting small B's appearing in the next 5-10 years on this one. (or am I confused and this is a new Ford mini-van?)

Now back to our previous programming...

That is one sharp looking van. Sure should be stiff compensation for the Sprinter. Bring it in Ford

I wouldn't mind the v-6 eco-boost engine either. With the twin turbo's, it doesn't loose as much power in high elevations as a naturally breathing gasser.

No, that is the full size van of the future for Ford. It competes with the Sprinter overseas.
