Do what I do.....I dial 1 and get a rep online. I ask some normal questions and of course they have a prepared scrip to follow and want to ask you their questions. I keep interrupting and start to tell them a funny story about one of my grandkids, of course they interrupt and start to get back on the script but I'm just as persistent to tell them about the grandkids. After a bit of fun with it, they get tired and hang up.
Can't say as to whether or not I get anymore calls from the same credit card company or not, but its my fun for the day.

Yep - done that often - more fun after a bit - tell the caller your brother handles (whatever it is) - or - "actually, you really want to speak to my brother".

Caller usually says - "may I speak to him?".
Sure - hold on. Then *you* say hello - and start over.

If caller says you sound just like your brother - you tell him
we're twins, sound alike, think alike, etc. etc. - and continue with story time.

Reverse "phishing" - reel 'em in!.

I dont get many calls anymore. BUT............when I did get them, I would ask them to hold on just a sec and i would get back to them. they would always comply. then I would hang the phone on my shoulder ( very long cord) and begin to clean in my kitchen. Made a bit of noise. after several minutes I would hear someone say " Hello...Hello" and I would smile and continue to clean. the cleaning and the Hello...Hello would go on for several minutes. then, would you believe this?? They would hang up on ME!

I used to use a gizmo called TeleZapper that sent out a disconnected line tone. Took awhile to get rid of the callers but it did work. I am about to start digging through my tote bin of electronic junk to see if I still have it. Still around on Amazon and I bet eBay has a bunch of them too.

I don't think you can stop a criminal from soliciting suckers online. FYI they want your information to use in their criminal activity. Hang up or create a contact in your phone and add a special ring for the variety of numbers they use.

Have you ever read the E-mail exchange between the 419er and one Harry Potter (A fictitious name the real author used for the exchange).

It is a fairly good comedy routine, since we all know who H. Potter is (At least I hope you do, if not he is a character in a series of books, not a real person)

I don't know, you guys... here's my attitude:

If you don't care enough about me to have a live person dial my number - then I immediately hang up. It's not *rude* to hang up on a computer.

But if it IS a person on the other end, I interrupt and say "I realize this is your job and I'm proud of you for being willing to work at a terrible one - HOWEVER - we do not support businesses or organizations that utilize telemarketing phone calls. Please remove our name from your calling list and have a really great day" - THEN I hang up.

You said almost all the magic words, "please remove my name and --number-- from your call list" Don't forget to say the number too! Also if you ask for their call policy, they have to provide it. (Per the Federal Law)

Here in Canada we also have the no-call list. But we also have another law. Once you get a live rep on the line ask for the name of the company. Then ask them not to call back any more. Once they have been asked they are not allowd to call back for a minimum of 12 months. If they do call back the "customer" can file report with radio and telecommuniccations comittee. They will investigate and issue a fine to the company.
