Astros don't have a separate ladder frame like a pickup truck. So that rocker panel rust is structural failure. Let it go. It's only good for the engine and transmission. The rest of it has no value.

I'm pretty sure it's the truck he's looking at that has the rust.. His Astro seems to be fine?

Did it really seem I had it confused? I gotta work on my wording. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused. I know I do it sometimes.

I just traded a 04 Sierra with 90k and it did not have a speck of rust even with the Indiana winters. An 03 should not have that kind of rust.

Mitch, I thought the '03 was also an Astro. OP: If so, then a rusted Astro is scrap, except the 4.3 and 4L60E. A rusted-rocker pickup is no worry at all. Cosmetics mean nothing if they're not structural. An ugly truck can work just as well as a pretty truck.

OP, you said the truck already has rust and it will be sitting outside? Definately pass on it and look for a clean one. It will only get worse.

thanks for the help. I stopped and looked at it again and thought the rust didn't look that bad but I think I'd regret buying it. I think I'll look awhile longer.

I would look a little longer, we just traded a 2003 GMC Sierra Duramax/Allison with 103,000 miles on it, bought it new in Sept. 2002 and sold in Sept 2009. Absolutely no rust. However, we don't live anywhere close to salt water.
