Any suggestions? My current one is dead. Also, I hate when I talk and I can't tell my wife is saying something at the same time...

FRS

Instruct the wife to say "over" when done speaking and tell her you'll do the same.

I would think any set of 2-way radios you find at the local sporting goods store would do the job for you. The longer the range, the better, of course. We use Midlands at work and I have a set of Cobras at camp, and have also used Motorolas and all have done a fine job. Some have the built in weather channel feature, which could also be handy to have on a camping trip.

We use the FRS radio all the time at camp sites... They have private lines capabilities so we dont hear others using the same freqs etc...

Kinda neat to have... They used to be real popular items but the cell phone world has almost done them all in now..

Ours look something like this and purchased from Walmart I think several years back...

these small radios have not been very useful to us. mainly when we camp we are in the mountains and the trees block the signal. I gave one to grand son and when I wanted to check on him, I finally had to walk to the fishing pond to see how he was doing.

Instead of walkie talkies, I prefer using a CB in my truck and my partner has a hand held CB to communicate, especially when backing up with the 5th. wheel. The truck CB allows me to stay informed about road conditions/accidents etc etc.

thanks, I'll look into them.

The "over" part is a good idea but what if she just said "over" but as I back up she has to immediately say "STOP! STOP! over"

we've been doing this for so long we pretty much know what the other is gonna do when i have to back up. so we just use hand signals.

You will get the greatest distance with the VHF radios which cost twice as much but provide more than twice the range and clarity compared to FRS/GMRS radios which have a real world range of 1/2 to 3 miles depending upon the area.

Watt output and antenna size is what counts and VHF have a lot more power. If you have a base unit (one at the RV) with a one meter antenna attached it will greatly increase the communication range for the radio.

If you scan the FRS reviews you will find that people report problems with garbled speech for certain models and it is not strictly related to price.
