I am new at this and do not know what people are using for TV and Internet connections when in the middle of the wilderness where cell towers do not exist. Please be so kind as to share what you have found that works and anything you have found that does not work. Thanks to all that have done this first and are willing to share their experience.

I don't watch TV while traveling so I can't help you there, but for Internet I have a 3 watt cell phone amplifier combined with a Millenicom 3G USB stick that provides a connection most of the time. Of course there are parts of the country that are not covered by any cell coverage, but they are getting more rare by the month. Right now I'm in the Joseph H. Stewart Campground in Oregon & the connection it intermittent and slow - 51kbps...

We use Direct TV. Roof mount and portable satellite dish.
For internet, I still use my roof mounted Motosatdish with service from Hughes.net. Slower than some other plans, but dependable with a clear view of the southern sky. We have been able have limited success with Skype. Just have to pay attention to the delay between talking and listing.

Isn't this sort of an oxymoron wondering how to get TV and internet while camping in the wilderness?

I use MotoSat which is an automatic internet satellite dish on top of my RV with a BOW attachment arm for Direct TV Service and run it all off a 1000 Watt inverter. I recharge the batteries with 600 watts worth of solar panels setup on my 5er roof. I boondock around 10 months a year and get service anywhere I go.

Not when you are fulltiming and drycamping a lot-still need contact to pay bills, etc.

I have an AT&T MiFi. It runs about $40 per month for their smallest data plan which is good enough for bills & e-mail. Of course, the AT&T coverage is the weak link, especially in the west. I'm thinking to move to Verizon when this contract is up. In addition to the coverage limits, the battery life is pathetic. I need 120v to use it.

As far as phone service, most of the time boondocking we don't have any. We use direct tv, and I have an automatic satellite dish mounted on the roof of my hauler. When you get where you're going, just push a button and 30 seconds to 1 minute later, you are watching TV. I used to have the mobile tripod dish, and had about a 10% success rate with that. It was ridiculous, spending hours and hours trying to find a signal with this thing. The automatic is the only way to go for the dish, especially if it's windy out. The old tripod would blow over, where the roof mounted one is enclosed out of the weather, and always works perfectly.
