The USFS, State Parks and Custer County have imposed a complete fire ban for all campgrounds effective 7/2 .
Charcoal and propane are still permitted.
Fireworks displays have been cancelled in all towns.

edit: now charcoal, candles, any open flame banned

Normally a campfire goes with camping, but with the dryness we`ve had it should be common sense to not have a fire! I for one would miss it, but not as much as the charred remains of the Balck Hills!

Good decision... It's going to be a tough year fire-wise.

We drove through the Black Hills in July 1998. It had been a wet June. For the first time in 50 years or so they did not have a burn ban in place for Independence Day and were able to have fireworks on the monument. We found a local photographer selling prints of photos he took. We had him enlarge one to poster size and took it home for framing.

These days it seems more calendar driven than moisture driven though (ie: burn ban for the 4th even if it is a monsoon).

We had so much rain here in Florida, they might even have trouble getting the fireworks to light.

I haven't noticed that at all. It's DRY in the Rockies this year. I've never seen it so bad in 40+ years. And it's barely July!

Yep. Burn bans must be put in place just to inconvenience people over the the 4th... (scarasm)

The hills have had burn bans before, the last were in '03. & '04 that were not implemented until late july and even then lasted only a week or two.
Firework displays were not cancelled until 2010 at Mt. Rushmore and that was due to trees near there killed by mountain pine beetles.
That ban is now indefinite

I can tell you we had some not so happy campers. One or two actually left because of the ban. Wonder where they went?
