there 's a lot of talk on forums about towing 5th wheel With half-ton trucks but it's all over the place. I'm sure I'm Not the only one looking for answers so I thought I'd Start a thread so that we could compare our experiences with such combos.
How many of us towing 5W with 1/2 Ton?
Which TT and TT?
Positive or negative experience with combo unit?
Future plans?
No need to Re-ash the talk about 3/4 and 1 ton requirement.... Looking for the other side of the coin.

I'm kind of towing with a 1/2 ton, but it has 3/4 ton frame, axles and LT tires.

Just did my first 5 hour drive with it last weekend and figured it rode better with at least 2/3 water in the FW tank.

Why better with water in tank?
Less weight on pin?
Wish I had more payload but stucked with what I've got so hoping that the pin is not much higher than he brochure print.
If I load most of the cargo behind the rear axles will that reduce the pin weight?

I had a hemi and it did a lousy job pulling a 28' TT. I got 9 MPG or less and the semi's passed me going over the mountains. Made one trip and came home and traded for a diesel.

My FW tank is in front of the axles.

I dont think many tow fifth wheels with a 1/2 ton, everytime you hear someone say they are towing a fifth wheel with a 1/2 you always hear the same thngs , I am going to get stronger tires , I am going to add air bags , I am putting bushings to level the truck out and the wife has to ride on the back bumper of the trailer holding 40 gallons of water to keep the pin weight down. I towed with a 3/4 ton and I was close to all my weights then went for the 1 ton and towing with the proper size truck makes it so much better. You can try to tow anything with a half ton and if you have one of those super fords with the eco well thats all you will ever need you could replace a tractor tailer by fords standards. nothing like the right truck for the job.But to answer your question not many use a 1/2 ton to tow a fifth wheel. The pin weights and cargo over load the rear axle and tires.

Just tagging along two see the results. Either they have really improved the 1/2 ton trucks or they have really lightened the fiver.. Personally I towed a 25 ft TT with a Dodge 1/2 ton with 5.9.. Then bought our 3/4 ton, what a difference.. Then bought our fiver and feel comfortable. My old Dodge 1/2 ton would never had towed a fiver safely.
I know though they have some light weight units out now but still can't imagine that wieight on my old tow vehicle.
Yes I have seen some 1/2 tons in camp grounds with fivers, the ones I have seen where not light weight and where way over loaded.
To each his own though, but please know the trucks limits and don't put the other vehicles on the road in danger if you are over your vehicle limits. JMHO
