My hot water is usually so hot you can't keep your hand under the running water. Today, for some reason, it's not that scaulding hot as usual. It's warm-hot, but not, hot hot. I'm running on shore power. Any ideas? Thanks

How long between this use and the last time it was used?

How long has it been since you drained/flushed the water heater?

Does it get 'hot, hot' if on propane?

Electric element scaled up?
Heater Bypass valve cracked open?
Faulty 'normal' t-stat?
Loose connection on electric element?

It's been about a month since last useage. I did switch over to gas for a couple of hours, and didn't seem to make any difference.

I'd check the winter bypass valves to see if it's slightly open, mixing the cold into the hot.

It never hurts to drain and flush the water heater. I'm always amazed how much crud builds up in the thing.

If you have an outside shower, make sure that the faucet valves are shut off, and not just the shower head valve.

I had that happen a couple years ago, and it took me 3 days to figure out it was just because the outside shower had been left on. Even though it was closed at the head.

You might want to check the temperature of the water in the tank. It should be be about 140 degrees (unless you have a heater with a mixing valve then it will hotter). You can carefully release some water into a cup from the relief valve to measure it.

In my case the bypass/diverter ball valve had a slight leak which allowed the cold water to mix with the hot water as it came out of the tank.
