I realize there are various methods to protect my dinghy from stones or misc stuff when towing, am wondering what most people prefer?

What are you towing? The only toad we've had problems with regarding gravel and debris was a Toyota Celica. Since then, we towed a Chevy Blazer and I tow a Honda CR-V and neither incurred any nicks or scratches. The Toyota, because it was low to the ground, used to collect a lot of gravel up around the windshield. Never happened with our SUVs. The Blazer was towed with a DP.

I'm towing a 2008 crv, hoping to protect it from dings and scratches.I only have mud flaps behind the wheels at this time.

I tow a Jeep. Jeeps get scratches and dings in daily use. I don't worry about it.

More STUFF to set up and break down with every trip. Ugh....... Not for me. I agree with the Jeep comment above. We have never seen damage from towing that is any worse than driving my daily commute on the highway.....

X2 on the Protect-A-Tow! It does a great job of protecting the toad, and only takes a minute to hook up or unhook.

X2 on this. I looked at several protective shields made, was just not convinced they were/are necessary in all cases. I also did not want one more thing to have to set up and break down every time unless absolutely necessary. Want to keep toad hookup and unhook procedure as quick and simple as possible.
We tow a minivan, a Kia Sedona using a ReadyBrute tow bar (with no protective shield). So far I've found the van gets no more debris on the front than it'd normally get in regular driving. AAMOF it almost seems like less, as it gets nowhere near as many bug splats on the windshield as it would in regular driving.
My suggestion: BEFORE you throw several hundred $$ at a protective shield of any kind, take a trip or two without one, and look over the front of your toad. If its not getting any more debris than usual, just leave it alone and save your $$. OTOH, if you notice its getting hit with a lot of debris and whatever, THEN look into getting a shield.
A lot of it depends on the MH involved, IMO. How much rear overhang it has, type of tires, if there are any mudflaps behind the tires, where exhaust pipe is routed, etc.
FWIW, If I did decide we needed one, it'd probably be the Protect-a-tow. It seems like one of the better choices.

I used one si,milar to this. My rig also has the true mud flap behind the wheels. I added the additional in the rear to reduce road spray onto the toad. Amount of problems depends somewhat on how high your toad is off the ground and shape of it's nose.
