What can you tell me about the tow capacites on the 5.4L v8. I currently have a 5000 HTT. Looking to go to a 9800 pound(loaded), 32 foot travel trailer. I looked for info on this forum, but could not find anything. I know there is info here somewhere...links appreciated!
Here is a link to a truck I am going to look at. F250 CLICKY
Thanks!

Ford 2008 RV & Trailer Towing Guide - pdf
Go to page 18 for conventional towing, 19 for 5th wheel. Of course absolutes off the vehicle would be best.

I think the 5.4L is one of the most underrated/underestimated medium V-8's out there. It loves to rev, max torque at 3750 and max HP around 5000 and if and when you manage to keep your foot out of it returns some pretty impressive mileage numbers.... but, even in a very nice 3/4 ton like you are looking at, 9800# of trailer is asking a lot of a 300 HP truck. I didn't see a reference to the rear end gear ratio. If it has 4:10's or better it will be doable but I don't think you would enjoy the ride. As always... opinions and YMMV.
Edit: Came across engine specs {while researching another topic}, and have adjusted the max torque and HP rpm's accordingly.

Agree with Desert Captain to a "t"; very good motor & really nice truck overall, but here's hoping it has 4.10s or even 4.30s under it if you are going to tow 9800lb of RV.

Same engine I had in an '04 F150. Pulled a 23' TT weighing less than 6k#. It was okay on flat ground with no wind. But that kind of limits your camping areas. No way would I try a 9k# high profile rig with a 5.4L.

Not because I have one, but the V10 would be a better option if you can find one. The extra 100 ft/lb of torgue would make a big difference.

Depending on the cruising speed wanted and the terrain, it might be OK without 4.3s and maybe not even need 4.1s if fuel economy is a consideration.
I have the 2 valve version and it is one of the best engines I have ever had.

Because I have one I don't think I'd recommend either. My TT weighed in at 8,500 lbs ready to roll and while it was fine on relatively flat land, once you started to hit some stout hills it became....annoying. People say they love to rev, and they do, that's where they make peak power. The problem for me is I don't like listening to the dang things rev. Listening to a V8 screaming along at 4000+ rpm is not my idea of a relaxing ride. The 5.4 is probably going to be worse. You'd be pulling more weight and giving up cubic inches while doing it.
If you plan to spend the bulk of your time on flat land you might be ok, though I'd still be skeptical of the 5.4 with that much weight.

A lot of the towing performance of the truck is going to depend on whether the truck has 3.73 or 4.10 gears. Both were available from the factory. Both can swapped out for something else, if desired.
4.10's should be enough gear to tow the trailer half way reasonably well, though more gear would certainly be nice. If it has 3.73's you will want to change them. I would change them to 4.56 or 4.88.
