Storms have downed trees and cut off access to Cade's Cove in the Smokies tonight. Forest Service is working to to restore access and clear the road to trapped campers in the park. Injuries and possible fatalities are reported on the 11 o'clock news.
Please pray that all are safe

We're currently camping near Townsend. We lost power but it has been restored, so we're ok.

It wasn't too many years back we too were stranded in the ELKMONT camp area. This was due to access roads flooding on the creek however.
We finally got out and the next night another hugh rain storm came through and really flooded the ELKMONT camp ground and all of the folks right up next to the creek side all got washed down stream... It was something like 20 tent camp setups washed away as I recall...
The tree cover up on the mountain is very heavy so I can imagine this recent storm layed down a whole bunch of trees all over the Natl Park...

Two dead according to WLOS in Asheville. One due to a falling tree, one due to a motorcycle accident on a park "trail" (that's the word they used). We've had some violent but not very widespread thunderstorms in the past few days, expecting more this afternoon.
Also one camper, a teen boy, struck by lightning in Morganton (~50 mi E of here). Reportedly he was _under_ the TT. Got out with just a bruised foot.

Sure hope all is OK with the campers.Sorry to hear about the deaths. We camped last weekend for 4 days and had a thunderstorm come thru sunday evening with high winds and hail. Not a pleasant experience sitting inside the TT with the grandboys and trying not to show your worries.

I have been in the Smokey mountains when tornadoes came roaring in over Rich Mountain. I can attest it not some place you want to be when it happens. Roads like Rich mountain turn into rivers in a few minutes. Snakes are every where.
