We are new at RVing. Leaving Santa Fe, NM in the am going to Durango, CO. I'm thinking of Hwy 84 up to Chama, NM and then to Durango. Anyone out there made the trip? We are driving a 40' Class A diesel pulling a fullsize GMC truck. How are the grades?

Would appreciate any help here.

Fastest way there. We do that drive a couple of times a year. Pretty easy compared to other drives. The longest grade would be between Lake Abiquiu and Tierra Amarilla. Not very bad and has a passing lane most of the way. A few sharp curves before Pagosa Springs. Then easy to Durango.

Roads are fine. A couple of older section before Tierra Amarilla.

Took that route last summer, although we stopped over in Taos for a few days. Pleasant ride with few grades to worry about.

If you're going from Durango to Ouray (Hwy 550) I would carefully consider that route if you're new to RVing. I drove it last summer and it was by far the most "interesting" road I've ever driven. My brakes did get a little warm.

That route is a piece of cake.

It's interesting that what one person considers a piece of cake another finds just the opposite. Difference in rigs? Driving experience?

Re-read his post - he was commenting on Durango to Ouray, not Santa Fe to Durango.
