I would troubleshoot the entire shifting mechanism of your transmission, at the transmission itself. It doesn't sound like it is going completely out of park and completely into reverse.

Think you need a Chevy or GM truck shop to check things out. Reason I say Chevy or GM truck shop is because they might have parts in stock. Anyone else would not have parts that may need replacing in stock which would delay your repair. I had a similiar problem and it ended up being the cable that went down thru the steering column to the transmission linkage. The truck shop I took it to had to order that and it took several days to get it. They were not a Chevy/GM garage. I had the problem happen while I was on the road and had a mechanic manually put the transmission in drive. The starter would engage and start the motorhome, but I had to be careful where I parked, cause I could only go forward. That was done about a 1000 miles from home, and I finished the trip that way.

Which trans do you have? Is this an Allison or a 4L80/85E?
If we are to assume this is a 4L80E, I'm thinking the level on the side of the trans may have come loose. There is a nut that holds it in place. If it partially slips of the keyed shaft, it could be very sloppy. Or it could be the cable end as well.
