The wife, kids and I were camping on 7/3 in the Olympic Peninsula, Hoh Rainforest campground this week- we were use the RV heater set to about 65- as it was a bit chilly/wet early this week, when sometime around 6:30 in the morning something started grinding horribly- the noise was coming from the area of furnace- so I grabbed a flash light and pulled the fuse. Noise- stopped. After deciding it would be a waste to go back to bed I grabbed the tools and started into the furnace- this was my second adventure there because early in the season the furnance didn't work- after tearing it all apart I discovered it was bad contacts on the thermostat- so I have a rough idea how to take it apart-.

I remove the cover around the blower motor as I figured that is what was a making the noise- after the cover came off I found the problem-

MOUSE-

Somehow the mouse had timed getting in the fan cage right about the time the blower kicked in- needless to say this wasn't a gerbil wheel. After picking out the remains a for about 20 mins and 1/2 pack of wipes later I discovered feet, tail and bones in various stages of drying, and disposing of the corpse- I put everything back together and it works fine- I have never had a mouse problem much less one get into the furnace.

I don't recall where the air intake from the inside the RV is to the furnace box- but I did find droppings on the chairs that were left outside the RV- I am wondering if he might have jumped from the chair to the exhaust/intake ports? still baffles me- but I will get some rodent tap and some covers for the exhaust ports just to be safe this week.

I just wanted to share another interesting story since I have read so many other here.

Sorry for your misfortunes, but There are a few million folks on the east coast who would gladly pay you for a 65 degree day.

I didn't find any other signs of mouse in the RV and I was through a lot of the interior spaces.

We're planning another tour up the left coast and may camp in the Hoh again, will watch for mice and yellow banana slugs, the slugs invaded us in droves last time we were there.

We camped at a backcountry campground (mounting bike camping) a few years back in the Cascades and as soon as it got to dusk the mice came out. We were sitting on the bank of a creek enjoying some Irish whiskey (solving all the world's problems) and they were running all around and between us. Next day there was mouse poop on everything. Fortunately we had treed all our food. I'm sure they would have got in that if it was left out.

I have had mice build nests in the heaters on several of my vehicles.

Ron- there is a combustion chamber intake on the outside with the exhaust below it.
