I read the side of a bag of firewood we purchased in Arizona last winter, and was surprised at the list of chemicals in them....supposedly to kill the bugs, and make the wood OK to cross state lines. The smell of the bagged firewood was terrible compared to some of the Mesquite we got from a woodlot down the road.
So, good wood, a hot fire, and burning on a calm night all help some.
Just my opinion.
Cheers.

The only time they are smelly to me is when some bonehead is burning something other than wood in it that they shouldn't be.

And WHY does anyone need a campfire going when it's in the upper 90s daytime and mid 80s at bedtime???? Skeeters or man eaters????
Where I camp people have fires going all summer, doesn't matter if it is in the 90s. I admit, at night, so do I. To me a campfire and camping go together. Helps with the bugs, helps with roasting weenies and marshmallows, and gives a nice glow at night.

We love the campfire for cooking. No, they aren't any more smokey than they used to be. It's just a part of the camping experience.
Still having fun!

Yes it is getting worse. Building a good fire with flames and coals is a lost art. So now we get more smoke. As an Eagle Scout I just have to shake my head.

Besides, If there is no fire, how do you cook?? You got to have a fire to make stick biscuits. You got to have a fire to make baked potatoes. Well you can makes them in the oven. But that suks. You got to have a fire to make Gritts, and bacon, and Liver Mush, and eggs. You got to have a fire to make coffie, You got to have a fire to heat water to wash dishes. You got to have fire to pop Jiffy Pop Popcorn You just got to have a fire.

Well, this has been fun! Thanks to everyone who responded. Seems like there are those who like them and those who don't. Pretty much what I figured. Most responders though didn't really condemn or bad mouth fires themselves but rather the junk that some people burn. In all of this, please remember to be considerate of your neighbor when burning. Burn only seasoned wood and if you need a refresher course on how to make a fire burn cleanly, please get one. Finally, remember to put your fire out when you leave your camp or go to bed. One small ember can become an inferno quickly especially with the tremendous winds we've had this year....be safe and considerate....thanks again...Dennis
