our normal camping trips is bring the dog. a little one.
but in Sept I am doing a trip that means I will be away from the camper most of the day.
would you board the dog? he has never been boarded.
I could keep him in the fenced backyard for 1 short night and one long day/night and come home the next day. Have MIL check on him 3-4 times just for safety. (he would have open access to garage and all).
He has stayed out in the garage/yard for whole days while we shop, or leave for whatever reason. Just not overnight ever but I think he would do fine.
Our usual trips are he is crated maybe 3-4 hrs tops if we go out to eat or whatever, but this time it will be a full day. I can't take the chance AC fails, or something happens in that long of a time him stuck in the camper.
So what do people do with pets if they know they will be away a long time during a camping trip?

For a long day out of the camper, so we can enjoy our day without worrying about the dog, we always make a reservation at our destination for boarding. This is great peace of mind for both of us. Fido will have to have all shots up to date and proof will be required prior to check in. The cost is so minimal ($25-35$ per day) that we just feel really good about doing it this way. We enjoy our toruisty things more.

Ditto on finding a place while you are where you are going. Do a Google search, you're bound to find something.
It really depends on how much you want Fido with you the rest of the time.
He'll be fine at your house, unless there are some anxiety issues, and he chews stuff, or digs under the fence.
Having your MIL check on him would be good, and maybe ask her to lock him in the garage at night, rather than have the run of the yard (to much can happen)....and then come back early in the morning, to let him out for the day.

boy I just never thought of finding a boarding kennel at the destination.
because we do want him when at the site, so local destination boarding is smart.
what a good idea. just didn't occur to me.
thanks for opening my eyes on that tip
yes a tad on the fence now. I know he would be fine with MIL checking him but peace of mind on a local destination boarder I think is what I will do. (Yes, the anxiety issues are mine more than the dogs. He would fair well I believe. I would be a wreck wondering. )

Board the dog.
Over the years we have "kept an eye on" other peoples' dogs a number of times.
Baloney. I always felt we were being taken advantage of, but I never quite knew how to say no.
I still remember those times around 11 pm, when I would have liked to just hit the sack, when DW would say, "shouldn't you go check on their dog one more time?"

I'd try to board it also for the day. We never leave our dogs at home (even in the fenced yard) unattended. They can slip under the fence, and nowadays peoples pets are being stolen out of their yards. Nor would I ask/depend on someone else to watch them for us. My opinion only.

I hear ya. While MIL is always dependable, the 'what if' scenarios pop into my mind leaving doggie alone. I know what you mean.

If it's any consolation - my dogs LOVE to go to the boarding place we use locally - they drag us into the place!!
Just once, we tried to have a neighbor "check on the dogs"/let them out for a potty break while we were gone for an extended day trip. My dogs LOVE Rob - he always has dog treats in his pockets and they follow him around all the time. But that one time, because WE weren't there, my Aussie Ike regarded Rob as a "stranger" (?) and RAN FROM HIM. (Flaky Aussies!) Jumped the 4' fence like it didn't exist and ran out to the street. (Not a threat - it's a private road with a 15 mph speed limit) Fortunately, Rob can think like a dog, and opened the garage door and the door to the house; then stood in his yard and watched Ike make a big circle, then run back into the house. Sheeeesh! So if my dogs aren't WITH me - I want them locked up like they're in prison.

Good points about dogs escaping.
I have seen a couple of boarding places that had fenced in property, as well as a fenced in exercise yard within that fenced in property.
Two fences are better than one, kind of like wearing a belt to go with your suspenders. That way you never get caught with your pants down.
