You tried and that is good. Hope we meet down the road. Or up the road as we're in Brookings and headed up the coast.

If he didn't WANT to talk to you it would probably NOT be a rewarding conversation anyway. Just as YOU enjoy meeting new folks and talking to them it may be HIS dream to just be left alone so respect that, even if you don't understand it.
Amen to that!

I have a neighbor here at the seasonal campground that gets really furious when he waves at people going by and they don't respond. Seems like a lot of effort and agony for nothing to me. I speak when spoken to and don't when not. Easy peasy IMHO....:-D

Some folks just don't take to strangers I figure it's their loss.
I respond to and help my fellow campers anyway I can but don't engage those that want to be left alone.
I really don't see the problem and need to vent!

I agree with Skip... but please remember that older folks more than likely will have a hearing problem. People who have a soft voice (even men) are difficult to hear, along with children and women who have a higher frequency voice, and those who don't enunciate very well, or those who have a slight accent (foreign or locational). Even with hearing aids, it can be difficult for them to "understand" what you are saying even tho they can "hear" you.
I have found that they are not non-conformist or ill-mannered, it's just that by not talking it eliminates the difficulty associated with all of the above. Well, maybe it is a little ill-mannered, but you need to respect his wishes without condemning his actions.
Older people have issues that others just can't understand...however, in time, they will.

Just because he's from South Dakota doesn't mean he's from the "South". I've noticed a big difference in where people are from will often affect how friendly or personable they are to strangers.
His loss.

X2. I have found that the guys on crotch rockets rarely wave back but I don't know if I'd take my hand off the grip at 120mph either. BTW, I ride an "old geezers bike (see signature).

I'm only 51 and I hear great out of my right ear but nothing on the left. If you were on my left and witnessing a conversation with my wife on my right and you tried to interject, you would feel intentionally ignored. Just sayin'... there can be entirely innocent explanations of which you are not aware.
