Just got back from our Black Hills vacation. Stayed at Beaver Lake Campground, awesome facility by the way. Anyway thought I would let anyone interested know how the V10 Excursion did.

Miles traveled 2168.6
Fuel used 246.677 gals.
MPG for trip 8.8 mpg
Cost of fuel $866.86
Highest paid $3.64 gal.
Lowest paid $3.26 gal.

Had a great time and will be going back again in the next year or two. I did a 1200 mile trip last year before I bought the SCT tuner and averaged 8.2 mpg on that trip. Most of it was in Missouri so I think the tuner helped quite a bit considering all the hilly and mountain driving this year. Hear is a link to our trip pics if interested. If I got that kind of fuel mileage towing, I would be looking for the reason.

I just got back from WI. I normally get 6 mpg towing using 93 oct. fuel here in IL, years ago before the ethanol switch I could get 7.5-8. I filled again in WI. with 91 oct. with no ethanol! I got 7.5 mpg. coming home. this is the second time I`ve done this unofficial mpg test to prove that ethanol in fuel will kill fuel mileage. not to mention just how much more performance the X has with the good fuel! and the good fuel is cheaper $3.39 a gal. in WI. compared to $3.75 in IL.

Nice report! The V10 and 4.30 is a good combo.

A V10 Excursion with 4.30s towing 9500lb clocking 8-9mpg sounds about right.

Not too many rigs get the kind of towing mpg's you are probably getting out of your 01 Cummins; those older 5.9s are easy on the fuel.

I get a solid 12 mpg pulling my 11,500# 5er, 18,500# GCVW through the Oregon Coast Range. Empty on the highway I get 20 mpg for a 7,000# 4X4.

Great report. I love my V10!!! Love the sound when it's working at 3000 rpms. SCT tuner is on my list.

As expected, I see this turning into a diesel vs gas discussion real quick.

I think, the original poster meant that his total for entire trip was 8.8 mpg. That would mean towing as well as maybe some running around at his destination not towing anything. That would bring the overall average up some.

But, still, 8.8 is possible towing with a V10. We got close to that when we towed a 34' TT with our V10 Excursion similar to the one the original poster has.
