We have a class A motorhome with a 50 amp cord....what happens if we can only get a site with a 30 amp hookup. I know we have some adaptors, but will be we able to run everything in the MH with only 30 amp hookup? Simple answers please...

My 87 Allegro has 50 amp service and I can run everything plus 1 ac with no issues. If for some reason I need the second I would just run the generator until it was cool enough inside. Most state parks in WA state are 30 amp service so it doesn't bother me. I carry 3 different adaptors for whatever I may encounter.

Be aware that a 50 amp cord is 50 amps at 240 volts, so it's 12,000 watts and a 30 amp cord is single phase, 120 volt, so it's only 3600 watts.

Other than A/C loads there isn't much to use that kind of power.

If you have 2 A/C's then you will be able to run only one...in a nutshell...

I have always limited my usage to about 3,000 watts and can not remember ever tripping my 30 amp power cord.

Each appliance has it's power rating stamped into it someplace, usually in the plastic on the bottom. My toaster is a extra large two slice model, with 1,500 watt rating, most are only about 800 - 900 watts. Coffee makers are a surprising to most 1,000 - 1,200 watts. This is to quickly heat up the water to 215F so it will flow into the pot sooner than later.

And electric skillet can be 1,200 watts as well. Microwave despite their 1,000 watt output rating can use 1200 watts. Hair dryer can be 1200 watts too. So try cooking bacon on a electric skillet, make toast and coffee all at once, it would be possible but not likely to trip the 50 amp circuit breaker.

The air conditioner is about 1,200 watts on a moderately warm day, up to 1,400 watts on a really hot day, and the higher the voltage the less amperage it will take, while a low voltage condition is brought even lower because the compressor amp draw goes up significantly when the voltage drops below 108. The more amperage that you are using, the more amps that are dropped across each plug connection, the 30 amp campground connections can get especially hot when the springs inside that hold the brass terminals tightly against the RV plug get hot and weak, causing up to 10 volts drop across the terminals, heating up the plug to over 140F on a warm day.

30 amp campgrounds require a voltage booster most of the time, due to the smaller wire size between the circuit breaker panels and the sites.

Good Luck,

Fred.

The Rules. As per Oliver Douglas of Green Acres. (If you recall that show, I do, Wife has Mrs. Douglas Disease, can't count to 3)

There are BIG ticket items and little ticket items in your rv, one variable ticket and one medium I will list

BIG: Air Conditioners, Microwae, Water heater, Space heaters if you have electric heat.

Medium, Fridge

Small, TV, Radio, VCR/DVR, Sat receiver. They don't count.

The variable item is the converter.. How big it is is directly related to how far DOWN the batteries are.

20 amps.. 1 BIG item, plus the fridge or several small items.

30 amps. 2 BIG items, the fridge and several small..

50 amps "All you can eat".

That simple.

But if your spouse can not count to 3.. Then like Mr. Douglas, you are going to have to go out and reset the breaker (Restart the generator on the show) .

I do remember that show, Darling! And thanks for the breakdown...That was truly the simple PRACTICAL answer I needed....Or to put it in really simple terms...run only 1 A/C at the time...

1...2...3...4...5...oops...supposed to stop at 3 !!! ;-)

I learned pretty quickly where the circuit breaker is cause I can't run a heater and a coffee pot at the same time. LOOL
