I would think it was overheated tranny fluid too.. Seen and heard that happening to Ford trannies for a long time..

Plus, the fact of backing up that beast of a trailer.. I can watch my trans temp go from 180* to over 210* in a couple of minutes if I don't switch to 4lo while backing up my trailer into it's spot at the house. I have to go up a steep driveway too.. Been doing this for 5 years on pavement and no issues with my 4x4 either..

I'm so glad everyone reacted properly and got the strapped in kids out safely!

Once it all cools down, you probably won't even have a leak anymore... Check the engine oil and trans fluid levels and go from there..

Good luck!

Mitch

Ranger431.

Sorry to read about your current "bad luck". Approx 7 years ago, I got cursed for a while as well. Within 3 month period, our Television blew, our pool filter blew, the head gasket in our car blew, our basement got flooded, my glasses broke and other bad luck things as well. Luckily, things settled down on month 5 and "back to normal" on month 6. Hopefully, things go "back to normal" in your life as well. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you - to push the curse out of your life.

Hope this helps...

After that all settled down I put the car into neutral and coasted down the hill (still had trailer brakes) to clear the road

You say, still had trailer brakes. Did that mean you didn't have truck brakes? I know a guy on another forum that we using his Excursion to back a boat into the water and his brake line burst spraying brake fluid all over the exhaust and it caught fire. He was fortunate and also was able to get out without injury and managed to get the fire out without totalling losing the Excursion, but it still did significant damage. Just something else to consider.

BTW, glad to hear no one was hurt and the new camper wasn't hurt either.

It's great to see people unselfishly volunteering to help out!

How would you like some good news? You raised a son who at ten years old kept his head and ran back TOWARD a fire to get his sister.

This is a very good sign!

This is very true. I told him today that it takes a special sort of person to put others ahead of themselves. He frequently asks about my years in the Army as a Ranger and stuff like that, and I told him he exhibited that kind of bravery already at only 10. Very proud of him.

Also can't express enough gratitude to Helmsey, what a kind offer. Fortunately we were able to get it in the driveway with the wrecker today.

Should know the financial damage from the dealership today.... Ugh.

I'm amazed at the bravery of your 10yo son! Not many brothers would have stepped in to rescue their baby sister from a car on fire. He deserves an ice cream cone!
