This caught my eye today in the Denver Post about Highway 24. It is not entirely closed but traffic to and from Leadville is being re-routed on Highway 91
We were going to take Highway 24 to Leadville so will have to go around. That's okay because I love stopping in Vail for lunch!

A more current update is that US 24 is completely closed to all traffic and there is no estimated time for reopening. The repairs are going to be more complex than expected. The closure includes all vehicles, including bicycles.
Plan to camp at Camp Hale this weekend. Was going to go down 91 to Leadville and then up 24 to Camp Hale. Now will take 24 down to Camp Hale .I have camped at or visited 11 Patton camps in the Cal-Ariz area and look forward to see where the 10th Mountain Div trained.
Last year I camped at the Anza Borrego area at about 200 ft and now I will be at about 10000 Ft.Cant beat Ariz in Winter and Co in summer.

The latest is that the hole is expanding as there is an abandoned railroad tunnel under the road. May be closed a long time!
We were just up to Red Cliff(Neat little town)day before yesterday and it was actually a much easier drive, on Rt 24, with no traffic coming from Leadville the drive way really easy.
Big headache for all the commuters from Leadville to Minturn, Vail, Eagle, Not a lot of alternate routes other than Rt 91 into Leadville.
With any luck they will get it fixed before the big Bike Race.

Must have just missed you was in Redcliff getting ice about 1:30 on the 14th. Didnt see any 42 ft RVs.It must have been a trip on those narrow streets.
Spent 3 days at the Camp Hale campground with my son and about 20 of his Navy Friends.Did you get caught in the thunder storm?
Any way Hiway 24 is now closed at the southern end of camp Hale going south bound.
Also I meant to say its great to live in areas where one time you can camp at near sea level and the other time at 10,000 ft.
I know anza borrego is in the Calif Desert. It is a great area

CDOT issued an update a couple of days ago. The road will be open before the August 23 US Pro Challenge bike race. Supposed to award a contract for fixing the road ASAP.

The Coach was in Golden -- we were in the Toad looking at a lot my son has in town. Love the Town, which will accommodate the 42 or bigger vehicles on the access road on the north side of the Rt 24 Bridge.
The Colorado Dept. of Transportation began repairs July 18 on the sinkhole on U.S. 24 over Tennessee Pass and will finish the week of August 6. The highway will remain closed in both directions to all traffic, including bicyclists, from mile marker (MM) 162 to MM 166. ?
Hayward Baker Inc. won the repair bid with a contract amount of $829,748.65. Incentives are part to the contract. If Hayward Baker can open one lane or both lanes of the highway by August 6, it will receive an additional $5,000 per day for early opening. Conversely, the firm will be assessed a disincentive of $5,000 for each day the highway remains closed past August 6. The total cost of repairs, including traffic control, design, etc. is estimated to be $1.5 million.
The situation was likely caused when wooden braces of a 100-year-old mining tunnel that runs under the road collapsed and opened up the 30-ft-plus diameter sinkhole.
CDOT began the expedited emergency bidding process for highway repairs after the sinkhole opened up on July 9. After receiving repair bids, CDOT selected the contractor based on the lowest bid amount and the time estimated to complete the project.
To repair the sinkhole and the highway, crews will be constructing a grout containment barrier on the north and south sides of the highway to contain the fill zone. Then, a thinner grout material will be poured into the void followed by a pressurized grout to fill any remaining voids, which will also compress the existing materials underneath the highway to strengthen the roadway platform. Once the void has been stabilized, crews will mill and pave a three-in. layer of asphalt to create a seamless transition for motorists over the former sinkhole site.
?CDOT says it continues to work with state historians and is referencing its archives to build a full history of the tunnel and the roadway.
Repairs are scheduled to be complete ahead of when the USA Pro Challenge plans to go through the area, barring any changes based on weather, natural disasters and other unforeseen circumstances, CDOT says.?
