I attempted to install a Supco today...

I'm not sure how long it needs to be charged up but after installing I had my wife plug in the trailer to the 15amp circuit and had her power on the unit...it started up...I had her shut the ac off and about 30 seconds later start up again, the breaker popped on the pedestal.

I figured it was a charge time thing....

But

When I grabbed onto the Supco to try and figure out how I was going to mount it I noticed that the plastic end was quite warm...my sense was that it was too hot so I unhooked it.

Do the Supco units get hot ? Is this a product of charging or discharging ?

Pulled off the top cover, the 2 little round gizmos seem to be the source of the heat... Looks like two something or others in parallel, assuming they are some sort of relay?..

I paralleled my Supco onto the existing cap....this guy says direct replace... Does it matter ?

I don't have the E either...just an SPP6

You shouldn't cycle the AC so quickly. The fact that it started was a good sign. Shutting it off and on too quickly would cause the problem you noted - especially on a 15 amp circuit. But, basically you had a locked rotor due to the short cycling of the compressor. It needs 3 - 4 minutes between cycles for the pressures to equalize before trying to restart.

I would do a direct replace. And yes on the end is a relay that cuts it out of the system after startup. I'm not sure but it may use heat, or get hot in functioning.....

I did a direct replace on mine and also added the fan delay relay. Works good with the Yamaha 2400

If it's not the "E" series I believe it is temperature controlled. A 15 amp circuit more than likely made it work pretty hard. Starting it twice that quickly should have made it very hot. Be careful when handleing those capacitors as they maintain a residual charge for a period after use. Most recommend arching across the terminals or using a resistor across the terminals to discharge them.

Cheers guys...

I had my wife power on the ac unit while unplucked from the pedestal to discharge things...

I just have to figure out a mounting bracket and I'm good to go then

MudChucker,

The SPP6 (no 'E") gets hot to the touch in normal operation. This is the result of the resistance (in the semiconductor material) increasing to the point of disconnecting the capacitor from the circuit...hopefully after the compressor has started.
I have heard a "rumor" of this heat causing fires, but have not seen confirmation. But suggest you mount it so that it isn't in contact with anything flammable.
It is intended to be paralleled with the compressors run capacitor. If you already have a start capacitor (many RV AC's don't), I suggest you remove it before installing the SPP6.
If you find the Supco capacitor doesn’t work for you, send me a PM and I'll help you find another solution (I have recently completed a lot of experimentation on starting the AC).

If I remove the factory start cap I'll even have room to leave the Supco in the box !

It did seem quite hot but perhaps that was my fault...

I'd hate to have a melt down on the roof tho.
