I have Microsoft Security Essentials in my programs. How do I create an icon on my desktop that I can just click on to run the scan? Thanks

easiest way is to create a shortcut on your desktop. you don't say which version of windows you're using but i think they're all about the same.
- locate the shortcut you're now using to run MSE.
- RIGHT click on the shortcut and while holding down the mouse key drag the shortcut to your desktop. release the mouse key and select COPY HERE.
- you should now have an icon for MSE on your desktop

You should find Microsoft Security Essentials in Start->All Programs and then you can right click and drag it to the desktop and click Copy Here in the menu that pops up as rk911 suggested.

Why would you need to run a program that's scheduled to run anyway ?
Go into your MSE program and be sure the schedule is to your liking, change it and save it if you want, then leave it alone-it will run on your schedule.
Mine runs bi-weekly at 2am.

Maybe he doesn't leave his PC on all the time so doesn't have a set schedule for scans. Or maybe he wants to be able to run a quick scan on demand when something is suspicious.

HappyKayakers: That's exactly what I want to be able to do. Please forgive my ignorance, but I don't understand how I can "click and drag" something from "Progarms" onto my desktop. They're two separate screens.

rk911: I do not currently have a shortcut to use MSE. It's listed in the "Programs" but I don't know how to use it at will. Also, I should have a small icon down in the lower right side of the task bar but I don't.

ok..we'll take it slowly.
first, wherever it is that you're going to run Microsoft Essentials (MSE)...whatever you're clicking on that's called a 'shortcut'.
second, to drag and drop something is pretty easy. try this. on your desktop screen pcik any icon. put your mouse pointer on that icon. press and HOLD down the LEFT mouse button. now just 'drag' that icon to another place on the screen by moving the mouse. move the icon to the upper right hand corner. when it's there just release the mouse button. that's how you drag an icon.
next, we can place two windows on the screen at the same time. open any window and then look in the upper right hand corner of any window. you should see 3 small boxes. one with the '-' symbol, another with two rectangles in it and the third with an 'X'. the '-' will completely minimize the window and the 'X' will close the window. you probably know that. the one in the middle...the one with two rectangles will make the window smaller so you can re-size it. try it. left click on that box and watch what happens. the window becomes smaller and the two rectangles have been replaced with a single square. left click on the square and watch what happenes. the window goes back to full size.
with the smaller window you can drag it to one side of the screen or the other. try it. make the window smaller by left clicking on the two small rectangles. now, put your mouse pointer anywhere in the blue bar at the top of the window...left click and HOLD the mouse button on and move your mouse to one side of the screen or the other. the window should move with the mouse. you've just dragged the window.
before we continue did all of that work for you?

rk911: I appreciate what you're trying to do. Perhaps I'm not stating my question correctly. I know how to "click and drag." The problem is that there is nothing to click on and then drag. If I go to START and then to CONTROL PANEL and then to ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS I see that MSE is listed there as one of the programs I have. If I click on it I am basically asked if I want to "remove" the program. I cannot figure out how to open it and be able to scan at will and/or change the preset scan times. Thanks for your help, and I'll understand if you give up.

ohhhhh, ok. that's a completely different problem than the one you originally stated.
LEFT click on the START button in the lower left corner of the screen. depending on your version of windows you should see 'Programs', 'All Programs'...something like that. LEFT click that and simply look for your program in the lists that follow.
now...if you want MSE on your desktop screen when you find MSE in the list referenced in the previous paragraph simply LEFT click on the program name and drag it to your desktop.
the ADD/REMOVE function is used to add or remove software from the computer. you should check into some basic computer classes at your local library, high school, park district or community college. a whole new world will open up to you.
good luck and ask if you still have problems.
