I have an older Suburban DSL(?) hot water heater.....5th wheel is a 1995 model. When I turn on the switch it tries to light the gas. The gas valve doesn't open so no gas gets to the burner. It will try lighting three or four times.
I pulled the wire connectors and put them back on several times thinking corrosion. Also took off the ground wire and cleaned it up. Coils still will not open the gas valve.
I don't know what else to look for to cause this problem. It has worked fine all these years until a few days ago. The first time this happened I took the wire connectors off and put them back on and it started working again.
A couple days ago we turned it on and it lit, then when it tried to kick on again it wouldn't light. Any suggestions??

Are you sure the valve isn't opening? Maybe opening but have a bee plug in the orifice. Have you check the voltage to the coil? Have you checked gas pressure? Can you see if the spark is at the tip of the rod and not carbon tracking to ground at the insulator? That's the only problem I've had with mine. Just trying to cover the basics. Craig
Check to see if you have a bad solenoid. They both need to open for it to light. They are hard to find but for the price of the gas valve, $130 and the price of the solenoid, about $25 you will look around. PPL has one that will work.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Took it to Gibbs RV & Service in Coos Bay, Oregon. They found a defective gas valve, replaced it and we were soon on our way again. Mama's a happy camper again!
