We are two weeks from going to Alaska--still have not decided whether to take the bikes along. Those of you who have made the trip, did you use them or is it something you just hauled serveral thousand miles. Our bikes are not mountain bike type.

If you do take them, be vigilant when cycling outside towns.
Bikes are very quiet and move quickly enough to catch a bear unaware. It is not a good thing to surprise a bear. Make noise as you cycle and keep your eyes and ears open.
Bears can run just about as fast as you can pedal.
In 2010 when we were walking the dogs on one of the paved paths near Willawaw campground in Alaska, I heard noise ahead on the trail. Came around the bend, the sur'nuff ... there was mama bear scooting her cubs away. We turned around and retraced our steps to the campground.

We were told that bicyclers were known as "meals on wheels" when we were in Alaska.

We took our mountain bikes with us last year. In the 3 months away from home we actually rode them 3 times. So, most of the time they were just along for the ride.

We asked this same question when we started out. We decided to bring them. They haven't left the bike rack yet. True, the main reason is a leg injury is keeping me from using the bike, but in thinking about it there are only about 3 or 4 times I would have used the bicycle.
It is true about the bears. And Moose. And we have encountered both in and around campgrounds. And on small town streets and in parking lots.
That said, we have seen quite a few folks out on their bicycles. If we were to make the trip again, the bicycles would stay at home.

I'll add that I've also seen many broken bicycle racks. And also see many bicycles bouncing up/down/all around on RVs. If you decide to take your bikes, do be sure that the bike rack is solid and secure. It only takes one good frost heave to mess the rack.

Look at Sue T's post on the Canada side of this forum for a picture of a black bear that was chasing a biker in the Yukon. I can't pedal fast enough to outrun the bear.

We also asked the same question last year when we made the trip. Decided not to take them and of course we saw places to ride. However, in the end, we were glad to not have them with us. If carried on rear of RV, must be a strong hitch & bike rack, must be covered and in the many, many miles hauled, very few miles would have been ridden. You will find many things to do without bikes and many times doing nothing just enjoying Canada & Alaska. Would love to go back and maybe will, enjoy your trip!!
