My wife and I had a conversation while camping last week about insurance and we'd like to have some opinions on this...
This all started when a group of teenage boys were passing a football in the campground street. Although I didn't see it happen, I heard the 'smack' of the football hit the hood of my truck and the ball roll under my trailer. There was no damage or marks from the impact (and no apology from the kid who threw it).
This got us talking about damage caused by accidents in a campground. Say that football caused a dent and I knew who caused it, how would you turn this into an insurance claim? To make it easier let's reverse the accident and my son comes to me and says the football he just passed hit the neighbor's car and put a big dent/scratch in it. Or my son's bike scratched the side of someone's car.
How would I turn this into my insurance and which insurance would it go on? House? Car? Trailer?
My trailer policy through Nationwide has some sort of campground liability but reading it, it sounds more like damage I cause to the campground.
Just wondering...

I think that's an excellent question for your insurance agent.

I'm sure it is. Just wanted to throw it out to the community for other opinions.

I agree...the fine print is different with each insurance provider.

I'm not a lawyer! Assume someone dents your truck --
Options:
1. Consider it a mark of character and point it out to people and tell your story.
2. Pay to have it repaired.
3. Assuming the cost of repairs is considerably more than your insurance deductible, turn it over to your insurance company to get it fixed, pay the deductible amount, and expect your insurance rates to go up at the next renewal.
4. If you have several uninvolved witnesses who are willing to go to court for you (considering that you're all in a campground and quite possibly quite a way from your homes), take it to small claims court in the jurisdiction where the campground is located and pray. {and it sounds like in your instance, you didn't really know who through the football anyway}
Aside: If you have some sort of claim, just turn it into any one of your insurance carriers. If they think it's not part of their coverage, they'll let you know and you can try the next one - but don't delay.

If they have damaged your tow vehicle then it's your tow vehicle's insurance comprehensive coverage that would cover it. Same for the TT if that was damaged the TT insurance policy.

So going back to my other question, say my son was the one who caused damage and he tells me.
The right thing for me to do is pay for the damage but that isn't always possible. At that point I would just tell the owner of the damaged vehicle to turn it into his comprehensive insurance and then risk higher premiums?

My carrier ALFA does not up rates after a comprehensive claim, however to ask Will it affect my insurance rate? Unfortunately, a definite answer across the board of insurance carriers is not available. Insurance companies have varying rules on comprehensive claims. Many times, comprehensive claims do not affect your insurance rate, but it is something you will have to verify with your carrier.
Definately a convoluted question, and because of that we keep a very low Comprehensive deductable, Just in case.

It would be a claim under the liability section of your homeowners insurance. The football thrown by your son or the bike that damages another vehicle is a common claim made--or it was in my book of business over the years.

It doesn't really matter where you are when your vehicle gets damaged- if you have comprehensive coverage, it's covered. Fault is an issue no matter where the damage occurs- if you can establish who the culprit is, they're liable.
The only difference I could see if you're in a campground may be that there MIGHT be an issue of the CG owner's liability responsibility if the damage is a result of some kind of negligence on his/her part. Of course, this would be true on most other private property, too.
