The other post are good on how to do black tank flush, to clean out your tank, mine says leave the valve open and have it ready drain. However I use a flow restricker, I use it on all of my inlet's as not to blow a valve as per the manufacture specks. I do this at a dump station, yes some people behind me in a line get frustrated taking a few minutes to do this.

I have the built in flush and do the same as others and close tha valve when close to empty just to build up some water. Im pretty sure they say to leave it open so you dont fill your tank and have it come up the toilet. Otherwise there is no risk of pressure build up as there is a large vent to the roof for both black and grey tanks.

Yes I run mine with the valve closed! the tank vent at the top of the camper will keep the tank from being pressurized! just don`t forget about it when you are doing other things around the RV! I dump, then turn on the flusher, close the black tank valve and let the tank fill (2/3), then dump again and let it finish. been doing this for years and very rarely do I have a black tank smell when flushing the toilet!

I run mine with the valve closed to put a little water into the tank. As noted just don't walk off and leave it running.

Please remember to blow it out with air or put some pink stuff into it when you winterize (yes, I know some of you don't need to winterize). I found our the hard way one spring that I forgot to do that and now I cannot use mine because a hose somewhere in the sealed up bottom has a leak. One of these days, I will remove the bottom cover and find/fix it, but until then it is hose through the bedroom.

Wow, guess I've been very lucky, never even thought about that.

I use my built in flush on my KZ Spree with the valve closed. That way it fills up the tank and puts a good flow of fresh water through everything to wash out loose stuff. I just stand by my tank level panel and hold the "Black Tank" button down. When the full light starts to flicker on I walk outside, shut the water off, and dump the tank, keeping an eye on what is coming through the clear elbow. Worst case scenario if you forget, the tank will fill up and overflow out the roof vent. Messy and undesirable but at least not flooding the TT. I never leave it unattended when I am doing it though.

Here is a link to a great video about flushing and cleaning your black tank.

The instructions of mine specifically said never to run it with the valve gate closed. I'm assuming they are afraid it would build up water pressure in the tank. Has anyone else run their with the valve closed?

I use the quickie flush every time I dump, but every now and then I'll use a back flush (Flush King) device to clear out the paper. The quickie flush does an okay job, but it leaves behind some pieces. The Flush King does a better job, but it's not as convenient as you must stand close and shut off the water once you believe the tank to be full.
I ran mine the first time with the valve closed and ended up with some water in the bathroom under the cabinetry at the outside wall near the built in flush. I don't know if leaving the gate valve closed was the cause of the water or not but ever since I have used a wand down the toilet.

Does anyone have any ideas why that may have happened....aside from the obvious that there is a defect in the built in flush system. I can't connect having the valve closed with getting water in the bathroom, but then there are lots of things I can't connect....like gravity and apples.

Your water line probably goes all downhill from the inlet to the tank and will drain. Mine obviously has a dip in the line somewhere so water can sit in it. Can't see it to tell until I take off the bottom covering.

I suspect you have a leak in the line somewhere between the inlet and the tank - probably where the line connects to the outside fitting. They probably didn't tighten the connection securely. I would take the fitting out and check that connection.

I have always closed my valve and filled my tank back up several times until water runs clear. It's amazing how much TP and other "stuff" will continue to get rinsed out the 2nd or 3rd time I fill the tank up. Like others say there is no risk of pressure the only risk is if you over fill the tank with the valve closed it's going to run out of the toliet which would be bad! As i fill mine up I can hear the sprayer noise change as the water gets close to it. That tell me it's time to pull the valve.

LTC as Barney says I think your hose connection at the black tank has a issue. make sure it has a clamp and it's tight.
