I generally leave mine in when traveling but remove it after the trailer is back home in the drive again. I cover mine with a home made cover to prevent me or anyone else from coming into contact with it and staining their clothing or barking their shins.

As for anyone who runs into your truck/car while it's sitting still, there is no way it would EVER be the fault or anyone other than the driver who hits it. A vehicle that is not moving can never be at fault in an accident.

Just like some others I take it out so I don't run into it.

The fifth wheel hitch comes out at home and the ball hitch stays in all the time.

I always take the hitch off. But its not because I'm worried about some other person tearing up their car. I've gotten too many grease stains on clothes....arrgh that drives me nuts! So the hitch comes out as soon as I'm unhooked & I toss it in the truck bed.

I hit my shin so hard one time, I thought I broke my leg. The moment I unhook the trailer the hitch is off the truck. I still get the chills thinking of hitting my shin.

Usually leave in when traveling, out at home. Have a pet peve against rusted and ugly hitches.
