Original Post was: Large truck repair place in Indy just gave me an estimate of over 5K for fixing front brakes on 2001 Monaco Knight. Coach has air over hydrylic disk brakes. Two master cylinders at 961.00 ea plus 374.00 labor to install the calipers. Two calipers at 427.00 ea. Four pads at 75.00 ea. Two seals at 234.00 each. Two rotors at 192.00 ea. plus 499.00 for labor to install the brakes. Freight 192.00. I have no doubt that the coach needs these things, but price sure seams salty. Any Comments would be appreciated.
Many responded and your comments were great. That price for a brake fix was absurd!
Now I have found out that the NHTSA has had a recall (#02V27800) out since Oct. 2002 to fix this very problem. Overheating and cracked rotors. Monaco never informed me! Wonder if the "new" Monaco will have to honor this NHTSA recall, or if they are off the hook as the "old" Monaco filed bankruptcy. I plan to call the "new" Monaco tomorrow. I have been driving a potential disaster for over 10 years! All comments appreciated.
LAST NIGHT AND TODAY: I related all this to the Service writer and asked for the Brand names and part numbers of the brake parts they were planning on installing and the he refused to give me this information. I then explained about the recall and said I wanted to be sure and not put "bad" brakes back onto the RV. He said he didnt know anything about a recall and again said it was against their policy to give out this info. I said "so you want me to pay over 5 Grand for brake parts and you wont tell me the part names or numbers. He said they wouldnt even put the information on my invoice! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?
I said no thanks and I would take the coach elsewhere. He said I owed them 2 hours "diagnostic time" for a total of $249.42. I paid the invoice and left. This all took place at PFM Care and Truck Care Center on Hanna Ave in Indianapolis, IN. If you ever need work done on your RV and you stop there, be sure to tell them ol' Norm said HI!
I am still trying to find the correct brakes so I can complete this project.

I remember your original post, and I believe you made the right choice. Please keep us informed of what transpires. Good luck and I hope you will be able to get it fixed properly.

I never fail, I just succeed in finding out what doesn't work
I'd like to suggest you rate that shop on RVServiceReviews.com so others will know to avoid it. Once you do, that 2 hour shop charge for what seems like a scam won't help their bottom line much after all the work they'll lose.
I had previously posted that you call the Monaco Service Center, after that MSCamping post this:
Wakarusa doesn't do chassis work, I just tried them this spring when we had our brake work done.. The rear brake were gone, coming home from the South, Bosch recall that didn't catch us, so we limped in.. Complete brakes on the rear axle, rotors, calipers, pads, new ABS sensors, new diff. fluid, and new brake fluid, all the seals, labor $2,200 and change.. I would highly recommend Cummins/Onan in Elkhart.. That's where Mike Miller(service center) suggested we go.. Phone number 1-574-262-4611 Mike M..
I think I would make that call to this outfit in Elkhart.
Probably good that you didn't get the work done at that shop, their warranty probably was one of 30 seconds or 30 feet whichever occured first.

Norm, there at Cummins in Elkhart they have access to about any make you want.. I wanted Bendix(we ended up with Meritors at there suggestion) and they would have to order the Bendix and they were twice the price of what we/they put on.. They gave me a list of parts and prices before they started so we could see what was involved.. The coach has never stopped so will since we have had it(new in '03).. We will do the fronts next spring even though they looked and operated OK, I just like to get rid of the Bosch..Mike M..
PS: They do have a camp spots out back,10 I think, electric only..
