I'm looking to upgrade from a 25 ft TT to a 36 ft 5th wheel. I have some questions and concerns about the pin & trailer weight. The unit is a Cougar 330RBK. Below are are specifications. I have a few questions. This is stated to be 1/2 ton towable. I just don't see it. I have a Chev. 2500hd durmax/allison combo. I've never paid that close of attention to weights since my current trailer only weights 5000 lbs. This seems kinda heavy even for a 3/4 ton truck.

330RBK Specifications
Shipping Weight 10035
Carrying Capacity 2230
Hitch 1865
Length 37' 4"
Width 8'
Height 12' 10"
Fresh Water 60
Waste Water 38
Gray Water 76

I have the same basic truck as you (mine's 4x4; you don't specify), and the =dry= pin wt. of that FW would just about max my truck's payload. I'd love to be the lawyer who got hold of the case of the guy who =did= tow this with a 1/2 ton and went after the dealer =and= mfr. after his truck self-destructed or after the accident. You and I can =tow= a trailer this size, we just can't =carry= it. 350/3500 SRW, minimum, is in your future if you're wedded to that FW.

I looked on the Keystone Cougar site didn't find it to be said about 1/2 ton towable. That is why I had to ask...better call dealer and inform him if your seriously looking.

I'd be buying a 3500/350 to pull it...

Obviously the dealer is incorrect. Hope they didn't sell any of these to people with half-tons based on the "half-ton towable" advertisement.

I towed 7500 lbs with my Armada. It is rated at 9300. It pulled it but it was a struggle at times. I can't imagine towing that much weight with any 1/2 ton regardless of the rating. You could probably get away with it in the flats but if you encounter any kind of hills I think you would be in trouble. I would strongly suggest at least a 3/4 ton diesel just based on my experience.

Your 2500 Dmax/A will have no trouble pulling a 12xxx 5er nor carrying up to 2700 lbs of wet pin weight.

The 1865 lb dry hitch weight will be closer to approx 2200-2300 lbs when loaded.

Looks like a good match for your truck.

Did any one pay attention to the fact the the OP has a 3/4 (2500) TV already?

Depending on the GVW and normal weight of the TV, it is possible that he may squeeze under the GVWR of the TV.

I am sure that if it is an HD, it for sure has Full Floating axles and like myself may exceed the GVWR, while still being well with in the GAWR's.
Loaded for Camping I am at least 900# over my trucks GVWR, but well under my GAWR's I am at 89 percent front and about 84 percent on the rear. Consider the fact that for a F150 EB Max Tow to get it's GVWR it is at 95 percent of GAWR!
It is a personal decision to exceed the GVWR, but it amazes me that my 2500 with a 8,800# GVWR with Full Floating rear axle, and 8 lug wheels with "E" rated tires that my MAX GVWR is only 78 percent of my axle ratings. Yet a F150 with semi floating rear axle and 7 lug wheels (also "E" rated tires) can run at 95 percent of axle rating. That means that about 300# past GVWR on the F150 and you are exceeding the axle rating.
Your choice, I have chosen to pull with my current setup very close to yours. I can hold speed on hills at 55 and that is with 3.55 gears.

Oops! Guess I wasn't paying attention. I just got caught up in the 1/2 ton discussion. Sorry.

Dealers will tell you anything to get you hooked up and out the gate.

What year is your truck? The newer ones have more payload than the classic models like mine. If you have a classic body style, I am 99% sure you would be over GVWR but well under your axle ratings. The 5th wheel in my sig loaded up ready to roll is less than 100lbs over my GVWR per the CAT scales. For grins and giggles I filled the fresh water tank and went to the scales and was almost 700lbs over GVWR, but still well within my axle ratings. My trailer's gross weight is 11,800 and when I scaled it full of water it was 11,200(ish) so I am right up against my gross weight if I were to tow with full water.
Hope this helps.
