Hubby has been thinking about us going from Key West, FL all the way to Alaska, to celebrate his retiring (for the second time) in a few years. Has anyone here done this? Would love to hear about it and have some suggestions for places to go along the way. We are retired Military so we have made cross country trips before but never up to the Upper West Coast (Washington and Oregon) and Alaska.
Not starting in Key West, but have from Tampa several times....an awesome, but long trip.

I have a circumnavigation course of the US mapped out, but haven't done it yet. Trying to circle the entire US (not counting Alasaka) staying as close to the coast or boarder as possible, is over 10,000 miles. I did read an article in a motorcycle magazine a few years ago about a couple that road Harely Davidson's from Florida to Alaska. Lots of people have done this but what was interesting about this couple is the female half did it on a 883 Sportster. Hubby got to ride a Road King which is not impressive, but it takes a pretty strong rear end to ride a Sportster all the way from Florida to Alaska.

Sounds like you have some time to do research. Every state has a tourism site because they'd like you to leave a little money someplace besides a gas station. Just google (state name) tourism. Then, if you find some places that look interesting, you can come back here to get a review or two. With all the people on this Forum, somebody's been there.
I'm also sure that many of us would like to hear about your picks, both before and after your trip. I've been in every state but Washington, Oregon and Hawaii, either for business, pleasure or just passing thru. I enjoy reading other people's opinions, good or bad, to see if they get added to my "bucket list".
Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.
We have gone twice. Yes we are 100 miles closer than you. The last time we did over 12,000 miles in 4 months. Places to see along the way. Ice fields Parkway between Banff and Jasper, the most beautiful drive we have ever been on. Glacier National Park along with Waterton lake NP (Canada). The Badlands/Mt Rushmore area. We hope to go again next summer. We have also done all but 50 miles of the Pacific Coast HYW by car but that was another trip.
Well I have been from Washington state to Key West, Florida and back.
From Washington state to Fairbanks, Alaska and back.
From Washington state to Guadalajara, Mexico and back.
Been in all Western states and most Southern ones.
All in my very small Truck Camper.
Traveled in Scandinavia and Russia by air, ferry and bus.
Traveled in Northern Europe by air and rented motorhome.
Oh almost forgot we traveled by air to Hawaii as well.
But it's taken me the 6 years since my retirement to do it.
Life is good.
Have fun and good luck!
