They come with the Roller Cam and No never replaced the Manifolds. Or do I know any one with the 7.4 Vortex engine or 8.1 Vortex that has.. However did replace them twice on our old big block Ford and on an older 454 and once on the V10.. The 7.4 Vortex and 8.1 engines are the same engine and bore but with a longer stroke on the 8.1 engine.. One thing with the early transmissions is the low gear that makes a lot of noise. That is the way they all are and Chevy has gone well out of their way to make it known. Never know any one to have a problem with them..

All good info guys and much appreciated! Thx for the grade pulling info snowdance...Similar to you we pull the Cascades routinely throughout the year...not expecting it to pull like my D/max by any means...sounds more like my 2500hd chev i had before with the 6.0 pulling my 5th wheel..45 or so over the passes and about 7-9mpg..we have a 17.5 ft aluminum boat that rings in at around 4k or so full of fuel, trailer etc we will be tuggin behind it as well.

Think we run the same areas. Our rig works great for us. I like the gearing on ours as its 3 gear up most every thing and not a lot of noise.. But we are never in a hurry any way.. 60ish is 2nd is normal.. I do have the Factory work shop disk for that and can look up any information you may want.. If you get one..

If the chassis is 1996 or newer it will say Vortec on the engine cover or valve covers. The vortec's got the roller cams and the new designed exhaust manifolds that did not have the same warping/bolt popping problems of the pre Vortec big blocks.

They do NOT get Allison transmissions for several years later and have the GM 4L80-e transmission as noted with a much lower 1st gear ratio than the 4L60 used in the half ton pickups. We did our Rocky run and on to the Pacific in our 1992 454 TBI and even in places like Yellowstone, Yosemite, etc never had to use the brakes to control speed going down steep grades unless they were long and 14% but did it with the 4L80-e transmission and engine.

Welcome to the dark side. I made the move from my truck camper to a motormome and haven't looked back. The whole idea is just to get out on the road and this makes it easier for ME.

Good info that they come with a roller cam. The valve train was an area that I always felt GM skimped on a bit.

The Allison that I was referring to was 'shiftless', didn't seem to want to hook up after shifting.

Now if everyone will just go out and buy the GM chassis, I'll be able to find one used next time!
